We are seeking a Lead UX Engineer - Researcher/Designer (T04) to lead strategy, design and research efforts that shape human-centered experiences for mission-critical space systems. You will own the end-to-end UX process for complex programs, from framing user problems to delivering validated design solutions that drive customer and program success. You will set and govern UX standards, mentor junior team members, and influence cross-functional stakeholders including SEIT, software engineering, operations and program leadership. The ideal candidate is a seasoned UX professional who can operate with high autonomy, communicate effectively, and deliver measurable impact for the program. You will apply human performance principles, methodologies, and technologies to the design of human-machine systems and products and lead efforts in research and design with your team.
Responsibilities
- Lead the strategy, design and research efforts shaping human-centered experiences for mission-critical space systems.
- Own the end-to-end UX process for complex programs—from framing user problems to delivering validated design solutions that drive customer and program success.
- Set and govern UX standards, mentor junior team members, and influence cross-functional stakeholders (SEIT, software engineering, operations, program leadership).
- Apply human performance principles, methodologies, and technologies to the design of human-machine systems and products; lead efforts in research and design with the team.
- Collaborate across Agile program teams to integrate UX principles into iterative development.
- Travel ~10% for user engagement visits or usability testing.
Basic Qualifications
- 8 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in STEM; 6 years with a Master's; 4 years with a PhD
- Active Secret clearance required at the time of application
- Experience leading diverse internal and external partners across multiple geographic regions to align goals and drive objectives
- Experience establishing user-centered design principles and standardized products, research methodologies, usability testing, and leading user feedback events
- Strong portfolio showcasing user-centered design solutions for web applications
- Experience communicating UX findings and design rationale to senior leadership and customers, shaping requirements and roadmaps
- Ability to translate complex requirements and user needs into intuitive design solutions
- Experience managing UX tasking and schedules, tracking progress, with proficiency in Earned Value Management Systems EVMS
- Ability to adapt and integrate UX principles into an Agile program management methodology
- Ability to travel ~10% of the time for user engagements
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-1472 (DoD Design Criteria Standard for Human Engineering)
- Experience designing applications for military users
- Mastery of design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Lucid)
- Familiarity with Systems Engineering
- Familiarity with software development languages
- Direct experience using the DOORS Requirements Management Database
- Expertise in design and prototyping tools (e.g., Axure, Lunacy, Adobe Suite, Lucid, Figma)
- Experience designing in an agile software development environment
- Experience contributing to Human Factors Analyses (including task analyses and predictive workload analyses, usability studies, workload and situational awareness surveys)
Compensation and Benefits
Primary Level Salary Range: $124,900.00 - $206,000.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses reward individual contributions and company results. VP/Director level employees may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
