Overview
The Institute for Justice is seeking a full-time, in-house, multimedia journalist to join our award-winning production team located in the Washington DC area.
This unique role will document and tell stories about everyday Americans who want to earn an honest living, own and enjoy their property, speak freely, and give their children a good education but find that the government is standing in their way.
Because we are a 501(c)3 organization, stories will not include national politics, the executive branch, etc.
Responsibilities
- Plan, shoot, and edit video content in our office’s studio or while traveling, working individually and as part of a 2- to 3-person team.

- The Multimedia Journalist will be well-versed in composition, lighting, and handheld camera work and should be agreeable, well-organized, enthusiastic, and team oriented. A passion for helping people and comfort interacting with other staff is a must.
Qualifications
- 2-6 years of professional experience as a video journalist, filming documentaries and/or other non-narrative projects.
- Experience working with tight deadlines.
- A portfolio that demonstrates understanding of storytelling, lighting, and composition for video.
- Familiarity with:
- Professional cameras (Canon Cinema or similar)
- Lighting and grip
- Editing with Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve, or similar
- Drones (or a willingness to become an FAA certified pilot)
- Practical on-set experience is a must.
- Ability to lift 50-pound equipment bags.
- Flexibility to travel, sometimes on a weekly basis.
- Audio editing and post-production color work experience is preferred but not required.
