The New York Times is an industry leader in visual journalism. The Reporter Video team identifies compelling stories and brings the depth of our reporting to our site and other platforms through video that features our journalists.
Role
This role is to produce, edit and publish short-form vertical videos daily and be versatile across news, features, enterprise, and investigative projects with newsroom colleagues. You should have expertise in video storytelling, including video editing and writing for narration and social copy, and a strong sense of the digital landscape. A portfolio showing modern mobile video storytelling, quick learning, creativity, and the ability to work on small or large teams is essential. Strong news judgment and solid technical skills are required; cinematography skills are a plus. The role requires meeting deadlines and juggling multiple projects.
This is a hybrid position based in New York with regular in-office attendance as guided by the department.
Please note we have two positions with the following schedules and we are open to having one of these roles based in DC:
Tuesday - Saturday
Sunday - Thursday
Responsibilities
- Write, produce, edit and publish short-form vertical videos every day.
- Identify breaking news and enterprise for our news coverage and create video featuring our journalists, using on-camera reporting, voiceover, and visual storytelling techniques including graphics and animation.
- Write scripts, wordsmith text and copy edit.
- Experiment with various forms of short-form vertical video storytelling.
- Collaborate with visual editors to produce video formats that bring our journalism to new audiences.
- Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- Report to a Senior Producer.
Basic Qualifications
- 4+ years of video storytelling, video editing and production experience at a news organization.
- Excellent news judgment and the ability to work with reporters to synthesize newsgathering or investigations into concise, engaging videos.
- Experience producing shoots and interviewing experts on camera.
- Experience creating original videos that integrate audio, video, still images and text.
- Strong video editing skills with Adobe Premiere.
- Facility with photo, video, audio, graphics and animation in storytelling.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changes in a fast-paced news environment.
- Design and animation skills with tools such as Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
- Portfolio or links to video work required.
Additional Information
This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The annual base pay range is $113,270.67 – $136,000 USD.
