Overview

The Audio Engineer is responsible for the production of live broadcasts, podcasts, recordings, and events for APM|MPR. The role supports Marketplace, APM’s national portfolio, and Minnesota Public Radio’s regional services (MPR News, YourClassical, and The Current). The Audio Engineer collaborates with colleagues across the organization and external partners to maintain high technical quality of broadcasts, recordings, podcasts, and events.

Expected Compensation Range: $36.00-$38.00 / hourly. Exact rate determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Work Location: St. Paul, MN

Your Responsibilities

  • Perform live audio mixing: on-air board operations, studio mixing of both talk and music, and sound reinforcement.
  • Mix and process audio for multi-channel distribution.
  • Recording and mixing of talk and music based audio content.
  • Maintain advanced knowledge and operational skill in digital audio production using in-house software-editing platforms (Dalet and Pro Tools) and mixing consoles (Axia, Midas, Yamaha).
  • Respond promptly and professionally to internal and external requests for audio files, technical assistance, and planning details.
  • Collaborate with show hosts, directors, and producers to support efficient and creative production.
  • Maintain high standards of audio and video production; follow standard operating procedures for consistent quality.
  • Stay current on technical and content changes with other departments and external partners.
  • Test, connect, and monitor codecs and equipment for live broadcasts (e.g., Comrex Access, LiveU, Opal, Riverside, Teams).
  • Operate audio/visual systems for events and meetings; handle in-house and field recording devices.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal colleagues and external constituents.
  • Provide back-up for other Audio Engineers and assist on department activities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or three or more years of experience as an audio engineer.
  • One or more years of experience in audio and/or video production.
  • Thorough knowledge of field recording, sound reinforcement, studio recording, post-production, and live broadcast procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience with digital audio technologies and editing software.
  • Proficiency on PC and Mac platforms.

  • Knowledge of signal processing equipment and digital plug-ins (equalizers, compressors, limiters, de-esser, reverb, and other effects).
  • Proficiency with multiple digital audio workstations, with Pro Tools preferred.
  • Experience operating audio consoles, microphones, mic pre-amps, patch bays/routers, multi-track recorders, AD/DA converters, and related equipment.
  • Ability to multi-task daily.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in a broadcasting or media environment.
  • Experience recording in varied environments (studios, control rooms, concert halls, churches, clubs, outdoor venues).
  • Operational experience with ISP technologies (DSL, fiber, cable, wireless) and related networking (VoIP, IP codecs, modems/routers, switches).
  • Knowledge of digital production and content management systems for on-air program production and automation.
  • Strong electronics background and knowledge of audiovisual systems and signal flow.
  • Working knowledge of presentation technology (projectors, video switchers).
  • Ability to shape content edits with creative editing and production techniques from the audience perspective.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Early morning hours required; may include weekend, evening, and holiday work.
  • Physical demands: move about in office and community settings; reach, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch; frequent data entry; lift up to 70 lbs of audio/video equipment.
  • Working conditions: occasional exposure to prevailing weather conditions; moderate noise level.
