Position Overview

If you desire to create and support lifelong reading, learning, and enjoyment then the IL Department of Corrections (IDOC) has an exciting opportunity for you! The IDOC is looking for a motivated individual to join their team as a Librarian I. This position performs professional library functions pertaining to the maintenance of the general and law libraries. In addition, the Librarian supports facility programs and services, manages collection development, provides reference services, supervises Individual in Custody clerks, and maintains library order and security. The ideal candidate for this position will be a team-oriented individual who is able to adapt to the changing needs of a dynamic, institutional library; be a self-starter and innovative thinker; and have a passion for Public Service. Essential Functions

  • Conducts and supervises the activities of the institutions law and general libraries.
  • Maintains and develops the library collection.
  • Prepares/reviews Order for Delivery and Request for Payment forms according to Shared Services provided business procedures and submits paperwork for Educational Facility Administrator’s signature.
  • Examines, interprets, and fills user requests for materials using the institutional library or through inter-library loans.
  • Prepares and updates list of reading materials and other library services.
  • Promotes library services.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in library science, history, information science, English, criminal justice, psychology, education, or a related field of study.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience using professional library techniques, systems, and/or procedures.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience with research and/or reference procedures, including legal research.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience with acquisition, classification, cataloging, and indexing principles of library content.
  • Prefers the ability to adapt library science theory to the requirements of an educational, medical, historical, and legal research library.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of experience establishing, maintaining, and directing a library system or program.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of experience maintaining orderly reference files.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of experience preparing comprehensive reports on library operations, use, and/or requirements.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience recommending publication of interest to patrons of a library facility.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience assisting patrons in utilization of a library facility.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires certification as a Notary Public be obtained during probationary period and kept current while in the position.
  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
