Overview

Part-Time Library Assistant - Customer Experience at City of McKinney. This role involves assisting library patrons by providing service at various desks and accurately arranging and shelving reading material. It is clerical in nature with related duties as required under direct supervision.

Essential Functions / Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Arrange library material in alphabetical and numerical order.
  • Shelve and retrieve material; inspect shelves for accuracy.
  • Assist in searching for lost or misplaced materials.
  • Process library card applications.
  • Provide service at public service desks using the library system.
  • Maintain holds shelves, adding/removing titles per requests and reports.
  • Assist patrons with circulation, directional, and informational questions.
  • Collect fines and fees.
  • Assist in training new employees.
  • Maintain information displays and lists of new acquisitions.
  • Polish and straighten Non-Fiction, Reference, Fiction and Children’s areas; assist other library staff as needed.
  • Assist in closing and securing the library.
  • Comply with City policies and procedures; adhere to assigned work schedule per City and department policies.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Behaviors

  • Ability to calculate, compute, and/or tabulate data; perform related actions.
  • Ability to provide guidance and interpretation of procedures to others.
  • Ability to start, stop, operate, and monitor equipment and materials used in essential functions.
  • Ability to utilize reference data and information such as library policy manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and follow written or verbal instructions; perform semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and build professional relationships.
  • Ability to adapt to change and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to pass a background and drug screen.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by little or no previous experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Any work-related experience that demonstrates proficiency in the above can substitute for the specified education and experience requirements.

Physical Demands / Supplemental

  • Most on-the-job time is spent talking, hearing, standing, reaching, and using hands.
  • Significant time spent walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
  • Some time spent sitting, climbing, or balancing; occasional tasting/smelling.
  • May be required to lift up to 10 pounds most of the time and up to 100+ pounds occasionally.
