Overview

The University of Virginia Library seeks a detail-oriented, accessibility-driven Digital Media Coordinator to support communications and uphold digital quality standards across multiple platforms. This position ensures accessible, accurate, up-to-date, and engaging digital content, aligning with the Library's commitment to inclusivity and compliance with accessibility standards.

The Digital Media Coordinator will help manage and coordinate digital content for platforms such as the Library website, social media, digital signage, and third-party web platforms. In collaboration with the Communications department and other Library colleagues, the coordinator will oversee content scheduling and be involved with publication workflows and quality assurance related to accessibility, usability, and brand consistency.

A primary responsibility is to ensure that all digital materials meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. The coordinator will serve as a liaison for accessibility and usability efforts, providing support and guidance to staff across Library departments. This role also coordinates with the Academic Captioning Project, helping content creators meet multimedia accessibility requirements.

It is regularly ranked in the top quartile of ARL libraries, with six locations, more than 220 staff, and more than 100 student employees. Responsibilities

  • Engage with content publishing workflows across websites, signage, and other digital outlets, ensuring accuracy, accessibility, and alignment with Library messaging.
  • In concert with the Communications team, maintain and manage digital content calendars and project schedules; track updates, communicate among stakeholders, and support timely execution.
  • Act as a point person for web accessibility compliance; provide guidance on WCAG 2.1 AA standards and review digital content materials for usability and accessibility.
  • Provide digital quality assurance, including content reviews, accessibility checks, and adherence to branding guidelines.
  • Support and advise content creators across departments: help implement best practices for web content, including writing, basic image editing, and overall usability.
  • Assist with digital asset creation and editing (e.g., graphics for web and signage).
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement of digital platforms by identifying barriers, proposing solutions, and developing lightweight documentation or training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Computer Engineering or related discipline.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in best practices related to digital content management, including writing and editing for the web.
  • Working knowledge of web accessibility standards and digital inclusion practices, including WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
  • Familiarity with the technical foundations of web communication (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and how they affect UX and accessibility.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to balance team collaboration with independent work.
  • Basic project coordination experience (e.g., managing content calendars, stakeholder communication, timelines).
  • Knowledge of best practices for image and multimedia preparation for web use (cropping, resolution, file formats, and accessibility considerations like captions or alt text).

In addition to the qualifications above, an ideal candidate will have experience reviewing digital content for accessibility and helping non-technical collaborators understand tools, requirements, and limitations of web platforms, particularly with WCAG 2.1 accessibility in mind. They will approach these challenges with an understanding of user experience (UX) and inclusive design principles. Ideally, they will have experience using Drupal, the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator), and Springshare tools (LibGuides).
