The incumbent engages with adult and pediatric oncology patients, individually or in groups, through therapeutic music activities. The Music Therapist also utilizes musical remedies to treat those suffering from a variety of issues.CORE JOB FUNCTIONS* Assesses client functioning levels, strengths, and areas of need in terms of perceptual, sensory, affective, communicative, musical or other abilities.* Establishes client goals or objectives for music therapy treatment, considering client needs, capabilities, and interests. Analyzes or synthesizes client data to draw conclusions or make recommendations for therapy.* Gathers diagnostic data from various sources, such as case documentation, observations of clients, and interviews of clients or family members.* Designs music therapy experiences to meet clients’ goals or objectives. Adapts existing, or creates new music therapy assessment instruments and procedures, to meet an individual client's needs.* Plans music therapy sessions to achieve appropriate transitions, pacing, sequencing, energy level, and intensity, in accordance with treatment plans.* Customizes treatment programs for specific client populations (i.e. hospice, psychiatric or obstetric populations). Confers with professionals on client's treatment team to develop, coordinate, or integrate treatment plans.* Reviews research or literature in music therapy or related disciplines.* Analyzes data to determine the effectiveness of specific treatments or therapy approaches.* Selects or adapts musical instruments and equipment and non-musical materials to meet treatment objectives.* Assesses the risks and benefits of treatment termination for clients.* Conducts or assists in the conduction of music therapy research.* Identifies and responds to emergency physical or mental health situations.* Writes treatment plans, case summaries, and progress reports related to individual clients or groups. Supervises staff, volunteers, practicum students, and interns engaged in music therapy activities.
