POSITION SUMMARY:

The Recreational Therapy/Music Therapy Assistant (Assistant), under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), is responsible for the assistance in the provision of Recreational Therapy department services, including assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic activity interventions and discharge leisure planning. The Assistant utilizes individual and/or group activity interventions to bring about positive changes in the patient’s behavior, be-it cognitive, social, emotional, or physical. The Assistant educates patients in healthy coping skills, and available leisure resources to continue in post-discharge leisure planning and involvement. The Assistant will be responsible for the provision of services, under the supervision of a CTRS, who follows the current standards of practice.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the CTRS in completion of patient assessment/evaluations, with co-signature by CTRS.
  • Assists the CTRS in development and documentation of the patients’ treatment plan including behaviorally stated goals, objectives and interventions related to Recreational Therapy department services, with co-signature by CTRS.
  • Assists the CTRS in implementation of treatment sessions including group and individual activities.
  • Assists the CTRS in completion of daily progress notes, with co-signature by CTRS.
  • Assists the CTRS in development of discharge plans and discharge recommendations, with co-signature by CTRS.
  • Establishes treatment goals and objectives to meet the individual needs of the patient, with co-signature by CTRS.

Qualifications

  • Satisfactory completed the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Music Therapy, or related field from an approved program required.
  • Ability to show reasonable intention and pending qualification to sit for the certification exam by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) or Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) within 12 months of hire required.
  • Experience in therapeutic recreation or music therapy programming required.
  • Experience with emotionally impaired or mental health patients in a psychiatric setting preferred.
