Overview
New York, NY – The New York Times seeks a Senior Engineering Manager in the Subscriber Experiences Mission to lead an engineering team building features in the News iOS app and collaborate with other teams to deliver a performant, stable and engaging app experience.
This is a hybrid role based in New York City headquarters, reporting to the Sr. Director, Engineering. Typical in-office days are two per week.
About the Team
- Responsible for building and maintaining the New York Times iOS News app, in collaboration with contributing teams
- An iOS team of 10+ engineers focused on iOS app development
- Builds infrastructure and core features highlighting NYT journalism and gateways to NYT products
- Launches prototypes quickly to run experiments and scale systems over time
- Ensures architecture fits business needs and quality standards for now and the future
Responsibilities
- Manage a group of mobile developers responsible for building, releasing and maintaining the iOS News app and collaborating with dependent engineering teams
- Contribute to architecture decisions, technical roadmap, and timeline estimations
- Collaborate with the Mobile Platforms team to implement best practices around core app architecture, development workflow and coding standards
- Partner with Product, Design and Data to prioritize and deliver features that impact subscriber growth goals
- Support career development for engineers at various stages
- Foster an inclusive and supportive culture within the News team and NYT engineering
- Define and drive observability and monitoring for the iOS News app
- Uphold the value of journalistic independence and commitment to the mission
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience managing mobile engineering teams
- 4+ years of experience building complex and highly performant iOS apps
- Strong understanding of iOS best practices and advocacy for iOS engineers
- Experience in complex product organizations, aligning stakeholders with diverse requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with large legacy codebases
- Experience driving a culture of performance monitoring and observability
- Experience stewarding a codebase with contributors across multiple teams
Compensation & Benefits
The annual base pay range for this role is $176,000 – $205,000 USD.
