Location: Chattanooga, TN

Overview

Under general supervision, is responsible for radio communications technical work of considerable difficulty; and performs related work as required. This is the lead and/or advanced working level class in the Radio Communications Tech sub-series. An employee in this class leads in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of communications equipment, including mobile radios, base stations, and transmitting towers. This class differs from Radio Communications Tech 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is not a lead worker and performs duties of lesser scope and complexity.

Responsibilities

  • Repairing and Maintaining Electronic Equipment: repairs radio transmitting equipment/systems (fixed, mobile, portable devices and ancillary equipment such as lighting and sirens) using test equipment to ensure reliable communications. Performs preventative maintenance per FCC guidelines and manufacturer specifications. Installs radio transmitting equipment/systems in vehicles and/or structures to meet operational needs. Programs system parameters, talk groups, frequencies, etc. using computer software (e.g., P25 IP network, microwave point-to-point, analog) to maintain or set up equipment.
  • Handling And Moving Objects: uses fine motor skills to install connections, solder components and connectors, crimp fittings, and pull fuses to install, maintain or repair equipment.
  • Evaluating Information To Determine Compliance With Standards: ensures compliance of equipment with agency, state, and federal guidelines through inspection and measurement.
  • Making Decisions And Solving Problems: assesses daily problems and determines appropriate action, including fabricating or adjusting equipment and knowing who to call for support.
  • Interacting With Computers: programs transceivers, IP routers and switches using manufacturer software; programs security/safety equipment; uses computers for daily tasks.
  • Organizing, Planning, And Prioritizing Work: determines work to be accomplished based on division priorities and system interruptions or safety concerns.
  • Coordinating The Work And Activities Of Others: oversees vendors/contractors on-site, coordinates installation/removal/repair of radio systems, and facilitates data sharing for interoperability.
  • Performing General Physical Activities: carries equipment (approximately 40 lbs), works in confined spaces, bends and lifts to install equipment.
  • Getting Information: monitors radio systems for faults, gathers failure information from clients, and inspects equipment to identify causes and actions needed.
  • Inspecting Equipment, Structures, Or Material: uses test equipment to detect failures and inspects towers, shelters, power sources, and environmental controls.
  • Establishing And Maintaining Interpersonal Relationships: maintains professional relationships with peers and users to support effective service delivery.
  • Provide Consultation And Advice To Others: offers technical expertise considering equipment needs and user concerns; shares data with staff of other agencies.
  • Documenting/Recording Information: completes work tickets and logs, records time and labor, and maintains radio databases with current parameters.
  • Updating And Using Relevant Knowledge: attends technical and safety training as required by the agency.
  • Communicating With Supervisors, Peers, Or Subordinates: participates in performance evaluations, submits work documents, and discusses joint radio issues.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to completion of one year of coursework at a vocational or technical school in communications equipment repair or related field and experience equivalent to four years of increasingly skilled full-time communications technical work; qualifying full-time work may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants must meet the following: possession of a radiotelephone license issued by the FCC or certification as a two-way radio technician; willing to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons; eligible for security clearance; at least 18 years of age; good moral character; complete a criminal history disclosure form; allow release of records; provide fingerprint sample for background check; not have certain felony convictions or disqualifying military discharge; pass a medical and psychological evaluation; complete prescribed training upon appointment. (Fingerprint-based background checks are conducted per agency guidelines.)

Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions.

Licenses and Driver Requirements

Note: Tennessee positions that involve driving require a valid driver's license and a clean driving record under state standards. Include your Driver's License Information in the application. Agencies may allow exceptions based on other factors.
