Compensation

  • Base pay range: $13.00/hr - $29.79/hr
  • $2,000 New Hire Incentive & Eligible for Reimbursement of Interview and Moving Expenses
  • Salary: $28.37 to $29.79 per hour at a minimum, depending on experience

Position Purpose

Position reports, transcribes, and serves as the guardian of the verbatim stenographic record of official court proceedings in an accurate, impartial, and confidential manner.

Responsibilities

  • Attend court sessions and provide verbatim reporting to ensure the written verbatim record is accurate and complete, reflecting whether procedures, laws, and statutes were followed.
  • Transcribe and produce transcripts requested by the Judge and other court personnel.
  • Schedule the Judge's court calendar to ensure hearings and trials are held in a timely manner and do not conflict with other court schedules/events.
  • Prepare correspondence, answer telephone inquiries, and respond to attorneys or parties on behalf of the Judge to ensure timely responses.
  • Perform other work as assigned, depending on Circuit/Judge.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited or non-accredited court reporting school with a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification and the ability to type 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy. South Dakota Notary Public is required to swear in witnesses in the courtroom. No experience is necessary.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required for employment.
  • 5% increase in salary after successful completion of CRR (Certified Real-time Reporter) certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures, standards, and ethics; legal terminology and processes; producing courtroom transcripts; English language proficiency; court reporter equipment, software, and recording equipment.

Ability To

  • Write shorthand at least 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy; stay up to date with changes in terminology and reporting procedures; troubleshoot computer equipment and software issues; concentrate for extended periods; listen to emotional testimony without reacting; maintain confidentiality; meet transcripts deadlines; schedule proceedings with multiple parties; communicate effectively; maintain a professional demeanor in emotional or volatile proceedings.
