Economic Policy Reporter Job at Semafor in Washington
Semafor, Washington, DC, United States, 20022
The Role
We're looking for a proven, news-hungry Washington reporter to join the Semafor DC team. You would be writing agenda-setting stories covering the Trump White House—with a broad emphasis on the administration’s economic priorities and choices and the global implications of those moves, but ranging far beyond as needed. We’re looking for someone who has a track record of sourcing up in and beyond the White House and/or federal agencies and a keen eye for the next big policy and political story. You’ll be a crucial member of our editorial team, contributing to Semafor’s daily report as well as our Principals newsletter — a must-read inside and outside Washington for insights into its policy and politics — and working with our business reporters. This is a high-profile role that will also be asked to play a major role in our live journalism business, moderating and helping with editorial planning and recruiting guests for event tentpoles that include our annual World Economy Summit. We’re looking for a versatile reporter who has a proven record of thinking beyond the story of the day, who can spot and explain bigger themes, and has the drive necessary to thrive in a new, ambitious environment.
Your Responsibilities
- Break news and deliver definitive analysis on the Trump administration economic agenda.
- Build and maintain key sources in the administration, and beyond.
- Collaborate across the DC and Wall Street team and the rest of Semafor to break stories across multiple beats.
- Help plan editorial content for and contribute to Semafor’s live journalism events, a slate led by the annual World Economy Summit.
What Makes You Qualified
- 4 or more years of relevant experience covering Washington.
- Proven ability to source deeply in complicated organizations and deliver stories that blend insider knowledge with authoritative writing.
- Proven understanding and ability to explain complex financial and economic stories.
- Passion for, and experience with, moderation of live interviews.
- Experience in scrappy and/or dynamic environments and willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed.
- A passion for news in all its forms.
