The Rising Waters Lab focuses on mounting threats from rising seas and other climate-driven impacts along coastal South Carolina, with a particular emphasis on Charleston and the Lowcountry. The team reports news from other regions in the state as needed. The Rising Waters coverage highlights human experiences and fosters understanding of how climate change affects daily life, infrastructure, resilience, and ecosystems.

Day-to-day reporting duties include writing stories about flooding, infrastructure challenges, resiliency and sustainability, green architecture and design, habitat loss, impacts on endangered species, and conservation efforts. You must be able to produce a steady flow of quick-turn enterprise stories, with daily coverage of in-the-moment news when needed, and collaborate with the team to develop enterprise stories and long-range projects.

We seek journalists who are passionate, collaborative team players, and who understand that metrics matter in attracting, growing and retaining a digital audience. The Rising Waters Lab is funded through The Post and Courier’s Public Service and Investigative fund, a nonprofit arm supported by donations from readers and endowments.

Responsibilities

  • Produce quick-turn enterprise stories and daily coverage as needed, with the ability to contribute to longer-range projects.
  • Report on flooding, infrastructure challenges, resiliency and sustainability, green architecture and design, habitat loss, impacts on endangered species, and conservation efforts.
  • Emphasize human experiences and connect climate change to how people live.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters across disciplines; participate in brainstorming sessions and public events to engage audiences.
  • Promote work digitally with attention to SEO and social platforms.

Requirements, Minimum Education Level, And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or another field if you have journalism experience
  • At least 2 years of full-time newsroom experience (significant journalism fellowship or internship experience counts)
  • A track record of producing exemplary journalism
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective working relationships
  • Strong prioritization skills with excellent follow-through
  • High-level reporting and writing skills
