Salary Range: 55,000 – 65,000 USD Annually. Total compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.

About the team: ALM’s global newsroom litigation team covers cutting-edge legal issues, consequential court cases, and emerging trends in litigation for a sophisticated business audience in cities including New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami and Atlanta. The team includes a mix of senior and junior reporters working with editors across the country.

Role requirements emphasize reporting on state and federal courts in Texas with focus areas in Houston and Dallas, the Texas Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Responsibilities

  • Cover state and federal courts in Dallas, Houston and other parts of Texas, with emphasis on Houston or Dallas, the Texas Supreme Court and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
  • Own and master a national practice-area beat based on an assigned subject.
  • Cover court decisions, filings, and identify litigation trends; undertake investigative and enterprise reporting related to litigation and litigators in Texas; cover key court hearings and trials.
  • Monitor filings to identify key suits, analyze litigation and rulings to extract key takeaways for readers; spot national trends that may appear across publications.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across ALM’s global newsroom to connect local reporting to national stories.
  • Produce breaking news stories on tight deadlines for readers of Law.com, Texas Lawyer and other publications in major legal markets.
  • Produce enterprise articles, including features and investigative pieces, while managing daily news commitments; typically 1 story per day and at least 1 enterprise story per week.
  • Write authoritatively on litigation issues of critical interest to legal industry professionals.
  • -work well in a team environment with colleagues around the world and engage sources to mine for scoops and insights.

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing: clear, engaging, authoritative, and deadline-driven.
  • Ability to establish and nurture relationships with lawyers, judges and lawmakers.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment; able to juggle features, analysis and daily stories on tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to cover court hearings and trials in person.
  • Ability to write 2-3 stories a day and at least two enterprise stories a month.
  • Positive, can-do attitude; good communication and time management; team player.
  • Creative and curious, with enthusiasm for using social platforms, video, interactive data, and other digital tools to enhance reporting.
  • Ideally 2-3 years’ experience in a daily news environment with some legal or business journalism; recent grads are welcome.
  • Ideally based in Houston or Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
