The Department of English in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa invites applicants for a 9-month, non-tenure-track, full-time instructor (English – Writing), to begin Fall 2025, pending position clearance. This position is annually renewable, dependent on satisfactory performance and need.

The fundamental mission of the Department of English is to develop students’ critical reading, writing, and creative skills through the study of various literatures in the English language, composition and rhetoric, and creative writing, with a particular emphasis on the cultural diversity of our location in the Pacific. Our faculty members are committed to quality research and scholarship, generous public service, and exemplary teaching at the BA, MA, and PhD levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate English writing courses;
  • Workload credit hours include 24 credits per academic year;
  • Assist in curriculum development;
  • Maintain an appropriate program of professional development;
  • Participate in departmental committees;
  • Engage in departmental, university, and community service;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA in English, or related field from a college or university of recognized standing;
  • Teaching experience at the college level;
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence through student evaluations, as indicated by consistently high ratings;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to train new writing teachers;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver faculty development workshops on the teaching of writing;
  • Demonstrated ability to assess student learning for a writing program.
