Overview
Power Marketer role at Seattle City Light. Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of customers served. The Power Marketers work with the Power Operations & Marketing team to schedule hydro resources and power purchase contracts, market surplus energy, transmission, and capacity into wholesale markets, and maximize value for customer-owners while meeting environmental considerations. The position may be on the Real-Time (RT) Power Marketing desk or combine Forward Power Marketer and Day Ahead Cash Trader responsibilities, based on business needs. The RT desk bids and submits base schedules into the CAISO Energy Imbalance Market; the Forward Power Marketer leads in identifying and structuring surplus/deficit energy, transmission, and capacity positions and provides operations support to Power Management leadership. This position reports to the Real Time Marketing Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Market surplus/deficit energy, transmission, and capacity type products in wholesale energy markets
- Schedule transmission, reserves & energy; maintain accurate log of events & transactions
- Identify, evaluate, and structure the marketing of surplus/deficit energy, transmission (PTP and 3rd AC), Lucky Peak energy, Frequency response, reserves and capacity positions
- Perform load forecasting, outage and unit maintenance coordination, and resource optimization duties
- Evaluate Request for Proposals (RFPs) and Requests for Bids (RFBs), providing data-driven recommendations to Power Management leadership
- Submit bid offers and base schedules into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) real-time and day ahead markets
- Analyze bidding strategies in the Energy Imbalance Market (EIM), evaluate their effectiveness, identify opportunities to increase value and communicate these strategies with the trading team
- Manage and optimize Seattle City Light hydro and long-term contractual resources
- Review, analyze, and report results of market operations
- Monitor fish licensing requirements during shifts
- Create and process E-Tags
- Assist System Operation Center in ensuring that NERC and WECC reliability standards are met
- Must be willing to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Perform other power marketing functions, as necessary
Qualifications
- Required Qualifications: Three years of experience in wholesale energy marketing or operations, resource planning and/or risk management, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration, mathematics, finance, economics, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent background through education/training/experience).
- Desired Qualifications: Deep understanding of energy market dynamics; knowledge of CAISO Capacity Market and Resource Adequacy Policies; familiarity with Western Systems Power Pool Agreement, Bonneville Power Administration Transmission practices, Mid-Columbia hydro operations, and NERC/WECC/CAISO reliability standards; excellent problem solving and analytical skills; strong written and verbal communication; 1-3 years of experience in wholesale energy markets as a Power Marketer; 1+ years of experience with CAISO and/or Energy Imbalance Market; experience in hydro resource operations, wholesale power marketing, or resource planning & forecasting; experience scheduling cascading hydro projects with operational constraints; self-starter with ability to work independently; strong decision-making and time management skills.
