Job Description
Communication Officers are responsible for receiving, processing, and relaying emergency and routine communications via radio, telephone, computer (including the Virginia Criminal Information Network and the National Crime Information Center), alarm devices, and teletype. They dispatch police, fire, operations, and other departments, including mutual aid jurisdictions.
Eligibility
High school diploma or GED required.
At least one (1) year of related experience preferred.
Experience with multi-channel radio systems and multi-line phone systems preferred.
Must be eligible for reinstatement (previous dispatchers), exemption (former federal or out-of-state dispatchers), or completion of the basic dispatcher academy.
Must successfully complete on-the-job training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Monitor closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems.
Answer internal and external calls while delivering professional customer service.
Dispatch officers to emergency and non-emergency calls, including alarms, disturbances, thefts, and other incidents, following departmental policy.
Dispatch fire and emergency medical personnel to calls such as medical emergencies, airfield alerts, fire alarms, hazmat, and other emergencies.
Maintain Lost and Found logs and assist passengers with inquiries.
Required Skills
Ability to learn the operation of communications equipment and computer systems connected to local, state, and federal agencies.
Knowledge of public safety communications practices, procedures, and equipment.
Ability to work under stressful conditions, make rapid decisions, and coordinate effectively.
Ability to obtain and relay accurate information quickly in adverse conditions.
Ability to speak clearly and calmly in crisis situations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid drivers license.
Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility for a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.
Ability to evaluate and learn new systems quickly as they relate to internal processes.
Ability to learn and become proficient in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management Systems.
Flexibility to work any assigned shift, including mandatory holidays, weekends, and overtime.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to type at least 35 WPM.
Must have an active telephone number and may be required to respond to emergency callbacks.
