Overview

NC State University is seeking an editor in chief (EIC) for the award-winning NC State Magazine to lead the strategic and operational aspects of the magazine — from big-picture, long-range planning, to all phases of the magazine cycle, to oversight and execution of the finer points that make NC State Magazine best in class. The EIC manages the magazine team, serves as a resource to university leadership, and facilitates a strong working relationship with the University Communications team. The goal is to strengthen the alumni, campus and greater Wolfpack communities and their connection to NC State through the magazine while showcasing and amplifying the varied voices and perspectives of alumni, faculty/staff and students.

Posting Information and Requirements:

Position is full-time, with a 12-month recurring appointment, and reporting to University Communications. The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with experience and education. Working schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm with infrequent nights and weekends; flexible work arrangements are available, including remote and/or hybrid locations for NC residents. A valid NC driver’s license is required within 60 days of start date and must be maintained as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and continually refine NC State Magazine’s editorial strategy in fulfillment of the University’s mission.
  • Strengthen NC State Magazine’s credibility as a trusted information source that fosters community among alumni and reinforces their connection to the University.
  • Cultivate the magazine’s character, style, voice and aesthetic.
  • Audience strategy: know the audience, deepen understanding of their interests, expand reach and readership across print and digital channels.
  • Operations: engage in long-range and immediate planning for print editions (produced three times a year), website content, digital media, content packages, special projects and issues; develop and assign story ideas; edit and review copy.
  • Presentation: oversee engagement through cover design, cover lines, table of contents, headlines, photo captions, pull quotes and other display copy; work with the art director on design elements.
  • Team management: lead and develop a high-performing team; support professional fulfillment, engagement and morale.
  • Business management: P&L responsibility for NC State Magazine.
  • Coordinate with the University Communications team and leadership; maintain regular check-ins with stakeholders; manage crisis-related timing and publication considerations.
  • Management: uphold journalistic integrity with diplomacy; encourage collaboration across the university; adapt to evolving priorities; demonstrate strong interpersonal, writing and presentation skills.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned based on organizational needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, including at least one year in a supervisory or lead role; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Direct and extensive experience in journalism, publishing, marketing communications, or advertising, preferably in higher education.
  • Direct and extensive experience with the production and editorial cycles of NC State Magazine.
  • Proven track record contributing to the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of NC State Magazine, including print and digital editions.
  • Strong planning, budgeting, creative thinking, writing, editing, advertising, client relations, print and web design, digital media and project management skills.
  • Excellent grammar and knowledge of AP style.
  • Proven leadership of a high-performing team with ability to coach and develop staff.
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office, project management tools, and ability to evolve with new technologies.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of Mac OSX and Windows environments; ability to work independently and exercise initiative; high integrity with confidential information.
  • Open and accessible interpersonal style; good listener; strong eye for design while keeping the reader in mind.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of the land grant, research Tier One university environment.

Licenses and Special Requirements

  • A valid North Carolina Driver’s License is required within 60 days of start date and must be maintained.
