Note: This description reflects the role responsibilities and qualifications for a General Librarian position at Queens Public Library.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Community Library Manager (ACLM), work as part of a Community Library team to welcome and engage all customers in the Library’s services, collections, and programs. Support the Library’s mission, values and overall Strategic Plan. Provide professional library service including reference, bibliographic instruction, Readers’ Advisory, and community referrals. Develop and maintain general collections based on community needs and interests. Create and provide programs and perform outreach. Assist customers in the use of service check in/out and multi-functional devices. Provide excellent customer and library service to the diverse communities of Queens.
  • Performs excellent internal and external customer service and library service in response to the information needs of the Library’s users and the overall community.
  • Provide reference, referrals and Readers’ Advisory services for all age groups. Assist customers in the use of print and electronic resources. Answer correspondence and inquiries on special reference subjects. Conduct reference interviews.
  • Conduct training sessions for the public in the use of the library OPAC, the internet and various databases.
  • Recommend and refer customers to alternative sources of information, both internal and external to the Library.
  • Process reserves and inter loan requests. Assist with circulation, and fines and fees as necessary.
  • Monitor the public service floor and engage customers.
  • Perform collection development with an emphasis on developing quality materials, including selecting and ordering materials. Evaluate and process book donations.
  • Determine usage patterns of collections by assessing circulation frequency, material condition and other criteria. Weeds materials according to standard library de-selection criteria. Ensure collections are current and meet the public’s needs. Ensure that specialized collections reflect subject matter knowledge and use of specialized bibliographies.
  • Ensure that discards, recommendations and orders for collection development are relevant. Submit clear and informative reviews on schedule. Ensure collections are regularly weeded and kept in good condition. Merchandise collections according to Library guidelines, as applicable.
  • Collaborate with the ACLM and Programs and Services Department to develop, deliver and evaluate a variety of innovative programs that meet the community’s evolving needs (e.g., book discussions, author talks, technology classes, arts and wellness activities).
  • Perform outreach to community organizations informing them of the Library’s services and develop partnerships for collaboration. Promote print and virtual library collections, programs and services to the public.
  • Act as a resource in training and knowledge development to team members. Create opportunities for customers to contribute to the Library (volunteering, social media postings, blogs, book clubs, etc.). May contribute content for social media platforms.
  • May perform duties such as compiling bibliographies and developing library user guides in print and electronic formats. Submit incident reports as directed. Participate in trainings as required.
  • In the absence of the Community Library Manager and ACLM, may serve as Librarian in charge, including primary contact for customer issues/conflict resolution and supervisory duties.
  • May volunteer to supervise hourly rates and volunteers. Performs other duties as assigned.

Schedule

The schedule for this position will include Saturdays and evenings.

Required Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • New York State Public Librarian’s Certificate.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population and effectively provide customer service to many customers simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, internet searching/technology, personal computers, and related technology skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Demonstrated enthusiasm for customer and public service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public Library experience.
  • Fluency with languages other than English.
