Music Therapist needed for UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health (YBH), in Butner, North Carolina. YBH is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility serving children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnosis, substance misuse and complex behaviors. The program emphasizes a milieu-based, trauma-informed and therapeutic setting, with safety as a key component of care. Therapy services operate within a large interdisciplinary team including Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Nursing Services. We are seeking a Music Therapist with child and adolescent mental health experience to join the multidisciplinary therapy team. The Music Therapist will assess, develop, and implement music therapy for individual and group sessions, supporting emotional, mental, and physical well-being. The role involves professional growth activities, mentorship, and potential clinical education for music therapy students, and contributing to program development, quality improvement, problem solving and productivity in a flexible team environment. The selected candidate will work 40 hours per week with regular weekend coverage and some holiday coverage. Highly preferred: experience in hospital-based mental health therapy services and experience with children and adolescent mental health.
Summary: Plans, coordinates and implements Music Therapy interventions in accordance with JCAHO standards and hospital/department policies. Facilitates and carries out treatments designed for pain management and development of coping skills for illness, injury or diagnosis of disease.
Responsibilities
- Consults with team members related to the use of music to meet individual patient needs. Plans, develops, coordinates and evaluates specialized programs for specific clinical service areas.
- Evaluates patient progress toward treatment goals and responses to treatment interventions, and adapts as necessary. Facilitates techniques for pain management and development of coping skills.
- Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance activities in accordance with JCAHO standards and hospital/department policies. Participates in design and implementation of research projects in the Department.
- Plans for all needed musical resources and coordinates program scheduling with co-workers and other disciplines. Participates in outreach activities related to the Music Therapy program.
- Plans, creates, and conducts individualized music therapy interventions considering patient needs, resources, health, safety, infection control and risk management to ensure patient safety and therapeutic benefit.
- Receives physician orders and assesses/evaluates patients to prescribe appropriate treatment interventions. Analyzes assessments, medical history, evaluations from allied health disciplines, and patient interviews to formulate treatment plans.
Qualifications
- Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy or related field which includes an internship.
- Licensure/Certification: Certified Music Therapist by the Board of Music Therapists.
- Professional Experience: One (1) year of experience in the field of Music Therapy.
