Overview

Technical Writer position in the Engineering and Technical Support category. Full-time, TS/SCI with polygraph clearance required. Travel up to 10% (local).

Responsibilities

  • As a Technical Writer, produce clear, concise, and accurate technical and programmatic documentation, including user manuals, guides, white papers, design specifications, and proposals.
  • Gather information, interview subject matter experts (SMEs), and conduct research to convey technical material effectively.
  • Utilize excellent communication skills to craft the customer’s message/requirements and coordinate across the enterprise.
  • Ensure the technical integrity of work performed and deliverables; prepare, review, revise, and maintain technical documents for software and systems engineering, system operations, testing, and user documentation.
  • Create code documentation, implementation guides, end-user guides, and field, data definition, and data flow documentation.
  • Research and gather information from engineering drawings, specifications, logs, and SME interviews, synthesizing into clear, audience-appropriate documents aligned to standards.
  • Translate engineering artifacts into accurate procedures, system descriptions, and interface specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain operations documentation, user guides, manuals, technical publications, reports, briefs, and white papers for internal and external audiences.
  • Plan document structure and coordinate layout/design, applying templates and style guides for consistency and readability.
  • Develop and maintain documentation templates, style guides, and frameworks, enforcing consistent adoption across deliverables.
  • Create visual aids, diagrams, and flowcharts, integrating graphics/media using Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Adobe tools.
  • Maintain and govern the documentation library, ensuring version control, clear taxonomy, and up-to-date content.
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility (Section 508/WCAG), formatting, branding, and quality standards, leading edits and peer reviews through sign-off.
  • Select appropriate media and formats for publication, coordinating production and delivery, including government deliverables.
  • Align documentation with product updates by collaborating with product managers, engineers, QA, support, and program leadership.

Qualifications

Required:

  • BA/BS degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of technical writing experience in programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity. Four (4) years of additional technical writing experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong technical writing and research skills.
  • Proficiency with authoring and publishing tools and advanced formatting and template design: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe, Photoshop.
  • Experience with desktop/electronic publishing workflows and digital content management.
  • Experience with document lifecycle and repository management tools (e.g., SharePoint, Confluence).
  • Knowledge of document structure, logic flow, readability, and accessibility best practices (e.g., Section 508/WCAG).
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, maintenance procedures, and system design documentation; comfortable with software, networking, and systems engineering terminology.
  • Experience documenting and applying data governance policies, including metadata standards, data quality, access, retention, and privacy.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organization, time management, and attention to detail.
  • Must be a US citizen with an active Top Secret/SCI DoD Security clearance with polygraph.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of ITSM frameworks (e.g., ITIL) and application to support/operations documentation.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps practices and CI/CD environments to align documentation with iterative releases.
  • Understanding of compliance and audit documentation standards and evidence requirements.
  • Familiarity with markup/structured authoring languages (e.g., HTML, XML, Markdown).
  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle, including planning, requirements management, configuration management, quality assurance, and release management.

Since this position can be worked in more than one location, the range shown is the national average for the position.

The proposed salary range for this position is:

$61,600-$129,300
