New York Post
Tech Reporter, The California Post
New York Post, Los Angeles, California, United States, 90079
Job Description :
The New York Post is heading West – and this is your chance to be a part of history as we open a brand-new newsroom and make a significant investment in Los Angeles. The California Post will be a game changer, putting the people of the Golden State first and holding the powerful to account across digital platforms and print.
This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: The California Post will bring The New York Post’s DNA of powerful, agenda-setting journalism to the West Coast and be a fresh and fearless voice for common sense.
Our focus will also go well beyond hard-hitting news and iconoclastic opinion. The nationally recognized Page Six will bring its sassy and brassy attitude directly to the entertainment capital of the world. The California Post Sports department will deliver muscular coverage of the biggest teams in town, from the locker room to the front office. Our Tech team will reveal the latest innovators and innovations that will shape the nation’s future.
Los Angeles is one of the great cities of the world, and it’s time L.A. – and California at large – had a bold, new voice. The California Post will be that voice. California, here we come!
As part of this bold expansion into Los Angeles, we are looking for an
LA-based
Tech Reporter
to cover the innovation, disruption, and game changing personalities coming out of California's biggest tech hubs. This reporter will dig into the companies, trends, leaders and deals shaping the future.
Reporting to the LA Specialist Editor, the Tech Reporter will be responsible for breaking news, writing enterprise stories, and delivering sharp analysis on the companies, trends, and people shaping the tech world in California.. From Big Tech giants changing the world to startups set to change the world, this beat is full of potential for a reporter with an eye for a story, a great contact list and a keen interest and understanding of emerging technology from AI to the latest development in the defense industry.
Application Instructions:
Applicants should submit a cover letter or a short video cover letter. If submitting a video, please include a link to the video in your cover letter or as part of an additional document. We do not accept direct video file uploads.
Responsibilities:
Cover the biggest developments in technology, from breaking news to deeper investigative and enterprise reporting.
Develop and maintain strong sources in Silicon Valley and across the broader tech industry.
Pitch original ideas and chase down scoops that reflect your strong sourcing and nose for news
Break down complex issues with clarity and voice, delivering stories that appeal to both casual readers and business insiders
Report and write clean, accurate, and compelling stories on deadline.
Stay plugged into industry trends, earnings reports, and breaking developments across Silicon Valley, LA, and beyond
Analyze and interpret data to identify trends and generate story ideas.
Work closely with editors and colleagues across desks to shape coverage and ensure the California Post is ahead on the most important tech stories.
Ensure all stories are optimized for digital consumption, including SEO-friendly headlines and effective use of visuals.
Use WordPress and other newsroom tools to file and publish stories.
Use social platforms, public records, and events to find stories and expand reach
Requirements:
At least five years of experience in a newsroom covering tech and business.
A strong understanding of the tech industry and its major players
Excellent writing, reporting, and fact-checking skills, with the ability to work on tight deadlines
Strong network of sources within the tech sector and proven ability to break news
Fast and clean writer with a sharp eye for angles that others might miss
High level of self-motivation, commitment to teamwork and ability to win in a competitive environment
Experience working in a digital first environment with an eye on engagement
Strong instincts for what makes a story click and how to bring it to life
A willingness to work in a fast paced environment and jump on breaking news
Familiarity with SEO best practices and analytics to track story performance.
On-camera experience is strongly preferred, as we’re looking for reporters who are comfortable discussing and presenting their stories on video to help extend our journalism across digital and social platforms
A strong social media presence or following is a plus
Bonus points for data reporting skills or fluency in another language
Must be flexible and adaptable as news demands shift, including availability to work evenings, weekends, and during breaking news events when needed.
Note: The New York Post adheres to a hybrid work model. This role will be expected to report into the office 4 days per week (subject to change depending on business needs).
At The New York Post we recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, our ranges reflect our good faith estimate to pay fairly as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
In addition to compensation, the company provides eligible employees a comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package, with a variety of physical health, retirement and savings, caregiving, emotional wellbeing, transportation, and other benefits, including “elective” benefits employees may select to best fit the needs and personal situations of our diverse workforce.
As an equal opportunity employer, the New York Post does not discriminate in hiring or the terms and conditions of employment because of an individual’s race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law. The New York Post will consider the provision of reasonable accommodations to known physical or mental disabilities of otherwise qualified applicants to enable them to participate in our application process and to effectively perform the essential functions of the job, unless doing so would impose an undue financial or operational hardship.
