The Director of Consumer Marketing leads cross-portfolio initiatives within the Rare Disease & Cardiometabolic Commercial Business Unit. The Director, Consumer Marketing reports to the Franchise Marketing Head – Rare Disease & Cardiometabolic Business Unit. The ideal candidate will understand the challenges involved in rare disease consumer marketing, with the ability to effectively manage budgets and prioritize marketing tactics through data‑driven insight gathering. This requires an analytical mindset with experience in developing and executing successful omnichannel consumer marketing campaigns in the rare disease market.
A Typical Day May Include
Lead the development and execution of consumer marketing strategies and tactical plans for rare disease portfolio assets across their product lifecycles (pre‑launch, launch, and post‑launch).
Build business cases for patient‑oriented programs that contribute to sustainable brand growth.
Develop innovative patient and caregiver focused tools and programs (e.g., disease education information and materials provided to patients; branded patient support tools to improve HCP and patient communication).
Develop and implement geotargeted digital marketing campaigns to reach rare disease and cardiometabolic patient populations, prioritizing precision over scale.
Partner with the patient support services team to align patient communication and engagement strategies, including sponsored genetic testing programs.
Lead the evolution, development and execution of comprehensive marketing strategies for the Patient Ambassador Program.
Manage recruitment, certification, and mentorship of ambassadors, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
Analyze reimbursement trends and barriers with cross‑functional teams to align marketing strategies with patient access and affordability challenges.
Use data analytics to identify patient needs and preferences, tailoring marketing content and strategies to improve engagement and outcomes.
Monitor marketplace trends and competitive benchmarking to inform all patient/consumer marketing programs and tactics.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to enhance the patient portion of the brand website.
Ensure cross‑functional communication and collaboration with Field Sales, Field Medical, Access and Reimbursement, Marketing, Legal, and Compliance.
Work with Patient Advocacy to develop patient organization and advocacy strategies.
Partner with Corporate Communications to develop and integrate public relations patient strategies and programs.
Collaborate with HCP and scientific marketing teams to ensure branding consistency and complementary tactics.
Work with the Rare Disease Insights & Analytics team to structure proactive data collection and analysis.
Manage budgets and monitor performance, ensuring cost‑effective delivery of programs and tracking KPIs.
Support the development of the overall brand strategy, functional plans, and budgets, ensuring patient‑focused tactics are included in annual brand plans.
Attend industry conferences and networking events to promote the brand and establish connections.
To Be Considered, You Must Possess
10–12 years of biopharmaceutical marketing experience with at least 5 years in consumer marketing
Rare disease / gene therapy experience preferred
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (MBA, PhD, MD) preferred
Proven track record with omnichannel consumer marketing plans that align with company goals and address rare disease market challenges
Ability to lead strategically, drive performance, build alignment, inform, negotiate, and collaborate
Experience in managing consumer marketing for a new product launch
Effective written and oral communication; experience delivering complex messages to diverse audiences
Initiative, creativity, strategic thinking, and ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
Strong project and process management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize
Team player with the ability to navigate cross‑functionally
Strong analytical skills (quantitative and qualitative)
