THE ROLE: UX Designer
American Student Assistance™ (ASA) is changing the way kids learn about careers and navigate postsecondary pathways through exploration, work-based learning, and free digital experiences.
ASA meets students both in and beyond the classroom with digital tools, resources, and information to empower their career planning journeys. We believe that exploring career possibilities, as early as middle school, and having equitable access to education-to-career pathways aligned with one’s passions and goals will result in greater confidence and long-term success for all students.
We’re looking for a UX Designer to join our growing product team and help craft thoughtful, intuitive, and accessible experiences for youth audiences (ages 13–24). This role focuses on designing engaging and mission-aligned digital applications that serve a diverse user base.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in human-centered design and a passion for translating user needs into elegant and effective design solutions. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, developers, researchers, and other designers to bring ideas to life—supporting everything from wireframes and prototypes to high-fidelity designs and usability testing.
What You’ll Do:
Research
Plan and conduct user research to understand user behaviors, pain points, and needs Collaborate with product managers, researchers, and other designers to understand user needs and business goals. Participate in UX research workshops (e.g., usability testing, interviews, focus groups) Partner with product managers to translate research into actionable insights, user journeys, and opportunities for product improvement. Effectively communicate research outcomes to stakeholders across varying levels of design and technical fluency. Design
Create low- and high-fidelity wireframes, prototypes, and polished visual designs using Figma. Ensure designs reflect modern UI/UX patterns, accessibility best practices (WCAG), and youth-friendly aesthetics. Design with a mobile-first design principle for a responsive platform Contribute to and evolve our design system, with a focus on documentation that is developer- and designer-friendly. Participate in brainstorms, design critiques, and cross-functional reviews. Collaboration
Collaborate across internal and external development teams to ensure design feasibility and consistency. Work cross-functionally to support the broader design culture and product goals. Collaborate with a diverse set of teams, including product managers, researchers, developers, designers, and marketing professionals. About You:
3+ years of experience designing digital experiences. 1-2 years conducting user research such as usability testing, user interviews, or surveys. Strong proficiency in Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and visual design. Solid foundation in UX principles, interaction design, and responsive web/mobile UI. Awareness of modern design trends and ability to apply them in a user-appropriate way. Understanding of WCAG accessibility guidelines and commitment to inclusive design. Comfortable interpreting research insights and data to inform design decisions. Strong communication skills, able to explain design ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences. Highly collaborative, detail-oriented, and proactive in solving design challenges. Basic Understanding of font-end systems (HTML & CSS) Bonus Skills (Nice to Have)
Graphic design, illustration, or visual storytelling capabilities. Video editing or motion design experience. Familiarity with youth engagement or educational platforms.
