Overview
The Senior Radio Technician performs, demonstrates, and applies technical and mechanical knowledge to support the functionality, configuration, use and troubleshooting of radio networks and other instrumentation used within the City and its departments.
Essential Functions
1 Performs general maintenance, set up, and technical troubleshooting of radio equipment, network, and related materials for use in various communications activities for departments; provides senior level technical direction to ensure functionality and operation.
2 Configures, adjusts, and programs instrumentation, and radio equipment for the City and its departments; monitors and provides technical knowledge of the equipment to ensure functionality, clarity, and service delivery; implements and achieves goals and objectives determined for the department; provides technical direction as needed.
3 Balances and accomplishes work priorities, projects schedules, resource allocation, and work plans as required; ensures the effective completion of all projects and activities while maintaining supplies and materials as needed.
4 Troubleshoots, reviews, and oversees the daily operation of all radio communications and other technical or instrumentation issues; addresses technical issues and schedules, recommends, designs, installs, and maintains control over equipment and operations.
5 Advises and instructs lower level technical employees; participates in various training and professional development for technical staff; ensures all activities related to radio electronics are completed in a professional and exceptional manner.
6 Effectively applies new policies, procedures, and standards; determines and implements methods to improve production or effectiveness.
7 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
1 Knowledge of radio communications technology to include Project 25 digital communications, analog communications, repeated radio systems and trunked radio systems in order to support current and future enterprise opportunities.
2 Knowledge of current and emerging technologies.
3 Knowledge of general communications activities.
4 Thorough knowledge of Federal Communications Commission laws and rules regarding use of radios and radio technology.
5 Ability to read and comprehend wiring diagrams and schematic drawings related to electronic equipment.
6 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
7 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in the installation, repair, maintenance and troubleshooting communications equipment and systems.
EQUIVALENCIES:
An associate degree or higher in electronics, engineering or computer science field plus three (3) years of the required experience will meet the education and experience requirements.
LICENSES and/or
CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid driver's license with good driving record.
Must have or obtain FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) or CompTIA A+ certification within probationary period.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must pass extensive (Federal Bureau of Investigation) background check.
No FELONY or Class A misdemeanor convictions.
No Class B misdemeanor conviction within the last ten (10) years.
No family violence convictions
Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any felony, class A misdemeanor or class B misdemeanor charge.
PREFERENCES:
Experience with IP and Circuit based networks.
Experience with electronic and test equipment including, but not limited to digital multi-meters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, watt meters, and network analyzers.
Experience with repair and maintenance of P25 two-way radio subscriber or infrastructure equipment including mobile, portable and base station radios and repeaters.
Experience with programming Light and Siren controllers such as Whelen and Federal systems.
Experience with programming, codeplug template building (Fleetmaps, Mission Plan), computer configuration and integration.
Experience with Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR)
Experience with Digital Video Recorders (DVR) for dash camera/body camera system
Salary Range
$26.38 - $32.04
