KUT is looking for a journalist to cover Hays County in Central Texas. This could be a great opportunity for an early career journalist to cover a little bit of everything and find your passion as a reporter. Candidates must be able to multi-task as they will have to juggle coverage on everything from local school boards to city councils to the county commission and everything in between. The reporter must live in Hays County.
Purpose
KUT Public Media informs, connects and strengthens the Central Texas community. Through independent local, regional, national and international news, and transformative music and community storytelling, we bring people together, amplify voices and provide critical information. This full-time position contributes to our mission by providing high quality journalism and reporting expertise for KUT broadcasts, events and recordings.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Report local news, including newscast spots, feature stories and live interviews aired during daily programming on KUT News and published on our digital platforms. Generate ideas, research topics, write, report, mix stories and post to the web. Ensure that all content produced meets KUT standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance.
- Develop deep knowledge of a designated beat. Plan collaboratively with editors to identify story lines on that beat to follow. Develop and maintain contacts on designated beat.
- Report news for state and national programming as appropriate; participate in newsroom editorial and planning meetings; participate in group editing sessions; provide editing for broadcast and digital stories as assigned.
- Participate in on-air fundraising and make special public appearances as assigned; serve as on-call talent for special coverage during emergencies. This could include going on live KUT broadcasts during breaking news.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree. One year of professional experience within a news organization. Experience meeting strict deadlines and reporting under strict time limits. Experience covering daily and spot news, in-depth features. Knowledge of the operations of public radio local and national news. Must be able to multi-task. Must be able to travel to community and respond to breaking news on short notice.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Radio/Television/Film, Communications, Journalism or related field. At least three years of full-time broadcast reporting and/or production experience in radio or news programming. Superior production skills including demonstrated ability to use Adobe Audition. Familiarity with Hays County. Spanish speaking skills. Experience moderating live discussions.
Work Details
- Work Shift: Monday through Friday (8 Hours/Day) is typical. Schedule will be centered around reporting responsibilities. There will be times when the work schedule will extend beyond standard office hours based on specific business needs, including occasional weeknights and weekends during special news events.
- Salary Range: $50,000+ depending on qualifications
- Working Conditions: May work around standard office as well as studio audio equipment. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Frequent standing and sitting and the use of manual dexterity. Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Various conditions for reporting in the field. Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines.
Final candidate will be required to pass a background check prior to starting employment. UT Austin is a Tobacco-free Campus.
