Overview

The Department of English invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing. The appointment begins Fall 2026 and is subject to the availability of funds. The position is for a creative writer in fiction and creative nonfiction. The successful candidate will teach two courses per semester (workshops and seminars), supervise theses, engage in creative activity that leads to publication, and participate in the life of the University and the MFA program through events and service work. Texas State’s MFA program is active and has a track record of nationally recognized writers and notable alumni from major fellowships and prizes. The campus is located thirty minutes from Austin in San Marcos.

Responsibilities

  • Teach two courses per semester, including workshops and seminars.
  • Supervise theses and advise MFA students.
  • Engage in creative activity that leads to publication and contribute to the department and program activities.
  • Participate in events and service within the University and the MFA program.

Required Qualifications

  • MFA or PhD in Creative Writing/English in hand at time of appointment.
  • At least one book published in one genre and first-serial publications in the other genre.
  • Experience teaching advanced creative writing workshops and/or seminars.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A record of publication on the national level.
  • Experience mentoring students.
  • Experience teaching underrepresented students.
  • Notable record of service work and/or community building.
