PURPOSE
Under the administrative direction of the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and day-to-day work direction of the Media Production Specialist III (MPS_III), the Film and Digital Media Technician supports the department’s technical services and manages Digital Media (DM) equipment and facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- In consultation with the chair and the Media Production Specialist III, coordinates the daily operations and provides support for the Cinematic Arts and Technology Department's technical functions and services, including assisting and coordinating faculty and students' use of media production and post-production technology, and coordinating student and faculty use of the department's studios and media labs. Provides audio-visual technology support for events and a variety of production and post-production activities, including equipment procurement, testing, setup, file maintenance, and digital media management. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
- Provides assistance and troubleshooting of technical hardware and software issues to students during scheduled lab hours. Provides technical support to students on production and post-production projects. Provides backup for Cinematic Arts staff.
- Schedules, manages, and maintains all studio and lab spaces, facilities, and related equipment. Tests, calibrates, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs equipment. Contacts and schedules technicians as needed.
- In collaboration with the MPS-III and other department staff, trains and supervises student assistants, determines methods and procedures, and assists with hiring and performance evaluations.
- Implements and enforces procedures and policies related to department space and equipment. Provides training and oversight of safety measures and ensures compliance with codes and regulations.
- Analyzes and develops proposals for future technical equipment, space, and budget needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the full range of production techniques and equipment for cinematography, lighting, editing, color grading, sound recording and mixing, and graphics. General knowledge of production principles for instructional media. Working knowledge of tools for authoring interactive multimedia delivered via various synchronous and asynchronous methods.
Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to learn narration and continuity script writing, and a strong foundation in English grammar. Strong research skills and broad knowledge of resources and techniques for multimedia productions. Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain working relationships with staff and students.
Ability to understand operating procedures and underlying technology to troubleshoot equipment and systems. Strong organizational skills to independently manage and coordinate all facets of productions, budgets, and other projects. Solid to advanced photographic processing and manipulation skills. Ability to provide lead work and project direction to other staff and train students involved in production projects.
Ability to develop, create, stage and/or produce professional quality visuals and evaluate production effectiveness in meeting objectives. Knowledge of techniques for television, film, radio, and audio productions. Ability to operate and maintain studio space and production equipment.
Working knowledge of safety requirements including handling hazardous chemicals and materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Entry to the first level requires basic knowledge and skill in graphics, still or motion picture photography, or television production. This is typically obtained through a bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least six months of experience in still and motion picture photography, including thorough knowledge of video production techniques.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS
Experience with post-production or audiovisual production, or equivalent. Excellent organizational, record-keeping, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work and work independently under deadlines. Demonstrated knowledge of pre-production, production and post-production systems, software, and equipment. Strong interpersonal skills to work with people at all levels. Basic electronics, troubleshooting, and repair methods for video and audio systems.
Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions of this position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Proficiency in Adobe Suite, Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. Experience with ETC Ion XE DMX lighting console, ETC Eos Family software, or equivalent; basic understanding of color science and industry standards (SMPTE, ITU, DCI).
Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace; 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
