Overview

Cornell University Library (CUL) seeks an Engineering Librarian. We are looking for someone proactive and dedicated to supporting teachers and learners, who is eager to engage with engineering and computer science disciplines, and who is committed to fostering relationships with faculty and researchers to develop impactful collections. The Engineering Librarian develops, promotes, and delivers library services and resources that meet changing responsibilities in education, research, and publishing; develops the collection; and serves as liaison to several campus departments. The Engineering Librarian will engage faculty, staff and students through teaching, research support, and other activities, and will establish an in-depth understanding of research data and information needs in engineering to inform decisions in collection development and management. You will be the subject expert in engineering topics on the Sciences Collection Development team to advise on selection and budgeting for collections across the Science disciplines. You would also be part of the Business, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship team that supports university-wide initiatives, including entrepreneurship.

As a Research, Teaching, and Extension (RTE) faculty member, the Engineering Librarian will engage in service, scholarship, and ongoing professional development to meet the requirements of promotion and reappointment at Cornell University Library.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, promote, and deliver library services and resources; develop the collection; and provide liaison services to campus departments.
  • Engage faculty, staff and students through teaching, research support, and other activities.
  • Establish an in-depth understanding of research data and information needs in engineering to inform collection development and management decisions.
  • Serve as the engineering subject expert on the Sciences Collection Development team to advise on selection and budgeting for collections across the science disciplines.
  • Collaborate with the Business, Engineering, and Entrepreneurship team to support university-wide initiatives, including entrepreneurship.
  • Engage in service, scholarship, and ongoing professional development to meet RTE requirements for promotion and reappointment.

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of relevant professional experience, including collection development strategy and providing research, teaching, and learning services in an academic or research library.
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications practices and trends.
  • Proven success in building and sustaining collaborative partnerships through positive service orientation and proactive liaison and outreach initiatives.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in fostering positive work relationships and the ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to continuously learn new skills, technologies, and methods and apply them to work.
  • Evidence of professional contributions in collection development and/or scholarly communication.
  • A master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

Preferred

  • Interest or background in text data mining, generative AI, and other skills that support computation research projects in computer science and engineering.
  • Academic background and/or applicable knowledge of engineering, physical sciences, or computer/information science.
  • Experience with assessment of collections and resource-related services.
  • Experience with library-vendor and publisher negotiation for scholarly resources.

Details

  • Academic rank: Associate Librarian.
  • Anticipated salary range: $78,000–$110,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Location: Ithaca, New York. Typically on the Ithaca campus 4 days per week, with potential for remote work 1 day per week. Hybrid arrangement may be modified at any time.
  • New York State tax reporting and withholdings required; additional state filings may be required when working outside New York State.

This position is in the Engineering Library within the College of Engineering, supporting the research, teaching, and engagement needs of the College and the Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science. The role includes collaboration with colleagues across the Cornell University Library system and may involve serving on the Cornell Tech campus as needed.
