DESCRIPTION: Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Law Librarian to lead our legal information services and support civic literacy in the community. This position develops, maintains, and provides access to legal reference materials and resources for the public, incarcerated individuals, legal professionals, and city departments. The Law Librarian also provides supervisory support within the Reference Department and assists with the Library’s Small Business Hub by guiding entrepreneurs on legal topics. This is a professional position requiring strong public service, instructional, and research skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and develops the Law Library’s print and electronic collections.
  • Provides legal reference and research assistance to library patrons and incarcerated individuals; does NOT offer legal advice.
  • Develops and conducts programs on legal topics, including legal literacy and access to justice.
  • Maintains access to legal databases and provides public instruction on their use.
  • Builds partnerships with local legal organizations, courts, law schools, and community groups.
  • Promotes Law Library resources and services through outreach and public engagement.
  • Supervises assigned reference staff and contributes to team development and training.
  • Supports the Small Business Hub by delivering workshops on business law basics and compliance.
  • Compiles and reports usage data and metrics on Law Library and Small Business Hub activities.

Preferred Qualifications

Juris Doctor (JD), paralegal certification, or formal coursework in law librarianship; Experience working in a legal, government, or academic law library setting; Supervisory or team leadership experience.

Vocational/Educational Requirements

Must be currently enrolled in a master’s level Library Science degree program and must obtain a master’s degree in Library Science within 12 months of hire from a school accredited by the American Library Association.

Special Certifications/Licenses

Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards. Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months after obtaining a master’s degree in library science or within three months of employment.

Special Requirements

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
