Regular/Temporary: Provisional; This is a civil service position. Selected candidates must pass a civil service exam and be appointed from the resulting list to gain permanent status.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, install, inspect, test, alter, and repair heating and air conditioning systems and equipment in MTA New York City Transit structures (such as shops, stations, and buildings).
- Service components including air conditioners, compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, motors, electrical and electronic controls and valves; service boilers, furnaces and components such as boiler sections, heaters, radiators, piping, pumps, motors, and controls.
- Solder and braze, keep records, write reports, and perform related work.
- Under supervision, perform duties in a physically demanding environment, which may include lifting up to 75 pounds, climbing ladders, working at heights up to 50 feet, and reading blueprints and schematics.
Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements: You must meet one of the following:
- Successful completion of a four-year, full-time apprenticeship in the construction, repair and maintenance of air conditioning and/or heating systems recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor; or any apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor; or
- Three years of full-time journey-level experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of industrial, commercial, or domestic air conditioning units, or commercial refrigeration equipment, or heating systems with electrical controls and wiring for such equipment.
- Two years of full-time journey-level experience (as in #2) plus one of the following: a) two years of experience as a mechanic’s helper/apprentice/trainee; b) graduation from a recognized trade school or technical school with a major in electromechanical, electrical, or electronic technology totaling 600 hours; c) graduation from a vocational high school with a related field; or d) an associate or higher degree in a related electro-mechanical field.
Note: Part-time experience is prorated. Required schools/colleges must be accredited by recognized accrediting bodies.

Additional Requirements
- Driver License: A valid New York State motor vehicle driver license with any required restrictions for the duties of this title; maintained for the duration of employment.

- Residency: New York City residency is not required.
- English: Ability to understand and be understood in English.
- Proof of Identity: Must prove identity and right to work in the United States as required by law.
Benefits and Conditions
Compensation: Salary range listed as current minimum $37.16 per hour for a 40-hour week, increasing to $43.72 per hour in the sixth year of service. Benefits include night/weekend differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, medical plan, and pension plan.
Training and Probation: Formalized training may be required during probation. A probationary period applies; failure to complete training or probation may result in termination.
