Pensions & Investments, Crain Communications’ international newspaper of money management, is seeking a reporter to cover infrastructure, real assets such as real estate, agriculture, timber, natural resources and other commodities, in both public and private markets. The reporter will produce breaking news articles, news analysis, news features and enterprise reporting for our website and newsletters, which may also appear in the monthly newspaper. The reporter will also cover public pension funds, including investments, board meetings and leadership changes.
Location: New York or Chicago. Remote options may be considered for candidates residing in Crain business states.
Responsibilities
- Cover infrastructure, real assets and related sectors in public and private markets with breaking news, analysis, and enterprise reporting for website, newsletters and print.
- Cover public pension funds: investments, board meetings, leadership changes, and related developments.
- Develop sources and maintain a beat in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Write accurate, clear, engaging copy on tight deadlines; provide insightful analysis and narrative storytelling.
Qualifications
- B.A. in journalism or related field required.
- At least three years’ experience in business, investing or corporate finance reporting.
- Knowledge of institutional investing in private markets, including infrastructure and real estate.
- Ability to understand and use corporate financial documents (e.g., quarterly earnings, 10-Ks, proxy statements) in journalism.
- Proven ability to develop sources and cover a beat.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and meet deadlines.
- Ability to write accurately and clearly on tight deadlines while engaging readers with compelling copy.
- Ability to cover news, generate enterprise features, and report insightful analysis.
Preferences
- Basic MS Excel ability.
- Skilled in social media with track record of using social tools to enhance readership.
- Scoop-obsessed with a collaborative mindset.
Pay Transparency
The estimated salary range for this position is $60,000 to $100,000. Final salary will consider experience, accomplishments and location. In addition to base salary, Crain offers competitive benefits including retirement plan contributions and bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.
Location and Environment
The job posting indicates a New York or Chicago base, with consideration for candidates in Crain states for remote work. Travel and field work may be required, with non-standard hours and on-call needs as the role evolves.
