Overview

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. Independent journalism sits at the heart of all we do as a company. This includes a world-renowned newsroom, reporting from nearly 160 countries, and a focus on reader experience across print, audio, digital, and apps. Our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is expanding its video journalism, showcasing the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, sharing urgent news updates, on-the-ground reporting, Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.

The Video department is looking for a Senior Producer to oversee a wide range of stories in formats, tempos, and coverage lines, including breaking news packages, reporter-on-camera segments, field shoots, and open-source investigative work. You will manage or regularly interface with a team of video journalists, editors, and motion graphics animators. You will start on investigative, open-source stories rooted in the news and will have opportunities to cover major breaking national and international stories.

We’re seeking a seasoned supervisor and news-driven storyteller with versatility to handle a spectrum from text-on-screen protests coverage to visual investigations of police violence. You should have impeccable news judgment and be able to work autonomously to identify critical stories, vet reporting, and structure powerful video for on- and off-platform use. A track record of sound editorial decisions and collaboration with other desks and beat reporters is essential.

You should have a record of leadership as a story driver on hard-hitting topics and as a supervisor of reporters and video production specialists. Your portfolio should reflect in-the-moment decision-making about pursuing emerging storylines in high-stakes environments.

Experience guiding video reporters who focus on geolocation and verification is important, as is the ability to orient teams to find, frame, and quickly pursue ambitious journalistic targets within dynamic news cycles. Your priority will be to drive our approach to news by identifying entry points into fast-breaking moments and determining quick-turn productions, longer enterprise pieces, or something in between. You may deploy reporters to the field, place subject-area experts on camera, or publish clips first and follow with a package as part of standard practice.

You will bring leadership to mentor team members and build productive partnerships with reporters and editors across the newsroom and in bureaus worldwide.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City with regular in-office attendance per departmental guidance.
