Position Summary
We’re looking for Volunteer Teaching Artists who are passionate about arts education and youth empowerment. In this role, you will lead interactive, arts-based literacy sessions in schools, libraries, or community spaces across the Prince George’s County area and the greater DMV region. Teaching Artists will facilitate storytelling, movement, acting, or music activities designed to engage youth ages 5–17 in reading, self-expression, and performance. You’ll help students develop social-emotional and literacy skills through the power of the arts. This is a volunteer, in-person role with flexible scheduling around school and community programming needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver creative, engaging, age-appropriate workshops rooted in storytelling, performance, or visual arts
- Prepare and adapt lesson plans based on assigned books and program goals
- Cultivate an inclusive, respectful, and inspiring learning environment
- Collaborate with the Program Team and fellow Teaching Artists to ensure consistency and impact
- Represent The Heart of Art’s mission and values in community spaces
- Participate in training and orientation prior to facilitating programs
- Provide brief reflections or feedback after sessions for program growth
Ideal Qualifications
- Experience working with children and youth (ages 5–17) in educational or artistic settings
- Background in theatre, music, dance, creative writing, or visual arts
- Ability to lead workshops with energy, creativity, and clarity
- Strong communication and classroom management skills
- Committed to equity, creativity, and youth empowerment
- Must be based in the DC, Maryland, or Virginia (DMV) region and able to travel to program sites in Prince George’s County
- Must be willing to complete a background check
