Overview
IT Operations Engineer – CUNY TV (IT Infrastructure Engineer 2) - Provisional. This position encompasses professional and responsible highly technical consultative and/or administrative work unique to the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and cloud deployments. Under administrative direction of a university IT manager, with broad latitude for independent action or decision, the engineer develops comprehensive infrastructure solutions and operates mission-critical infrastructure while protecting sensitive data, systems, and networks. May lead a team or participate in a team in planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining datacenter and cloud operations across IT facilities, network, security, telecommunications, servers, storage, and virtualization components.
There are three levels of this title. Assignment Levels 2 and 3 may oversee multiple projects and supervise employees. The complete job description is available through the CUNY HR site as IT Infrastructure Engineer.
Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, monitor, and maintain core infrastructure systems, including Cisco UCS + Dell-based VMware 7.x/8.x environments.
- Manage storage subsystems (TigerFS, Seagate, NetApp, Brocade Fibre Channel) and backups (Veeam, PresSTORE) with on-prem Spectra Logic LTO and S3-compatible cloud.
- Operate and monitor using SolarWinds (including NCM and IPAM) and manage power and environmental monitoring (APC).
- Maintain legacy Dell and HP servers (including iDRAC and iLO) and perform systems deployment and administration for Windows and Linux.
- Apply software and system patches, updates, and upgrades; maintain disaster recovery (DR) environment with failure/recovery testing.
- Maintain IT Run Book (SOP) documentation; identify and escalate potential system issues or design flaws before they impact performance.
- Ensure all systems adhere to CUNY security and operational policies; assist in drafting technical specifications for procurement and evaluate vendor submissions for RFPs, RFIs, and bids with recommendations.
Notes
- Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
- An appointment to this Competitive title/position in the Classified Civil Service Title Series will be made with a Provisional status. Employees in provisional status must pass a competitive civil service examination and be appointed from a civil service list to remain in the title/position.
Minimum Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree in computer science, engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of satisfactory full-time experience in the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments; or
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in item 1; or
- A high school diploma or its educational equivalent and ten (10) years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in item 1; or
- Education and/or experience equivalent to items 1–3 above. The following may substitute for some of the required experience: college credits, graduate credits in IT, information technology or related fields, and current certifications (e.g., CISSP, CCNA/CCNP, VCP, RHCE, etc.) as specified. All candidates must have a high school diploma or its educational equivalent and at least three (3) years of experience as described in item 1.
Assignment Levels
Level II: After meeting the Qualification Requirements above, an additional two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience in the design and engineering of complex datacenters, networks and/or cloud deployments is required for Level II. Level III: After meeting the Qualification Requirements above and the Level II requirements, an additional two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience to reach a total of four (4) years above the Qualification Requirements.
English Language Proficiency
Demonstrated English language proficiency to perform job duties effectively (speaking, reading, writing, and understanding).
Motor Vehicle Driver License
A New York State driver’s license may be required for some positions.
Other Qualifications
Preferred:
- 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and implementing advanced IT solutions
- Ability to collaborate with IT teams and third-party vendors
- Strong communication skills (verbal & written)
- Operational understanding of IP networking and security (Cisco and Palo Alto, AD/RADIUS)
- System monitoring (SNMP and Syslog via SolarWinds)
- IP/Fiber Channel storage (SMB, NFS)
- Backup solutions and best practices (Veeam, PresSTORE)
- Virtualization (VMware, Nutanix)
- Blade/Cluster computing (e.g., Proliant Blade Center, Cisco UCS, Dell)
- PowerShell, Linux (bash), Python scripting a plus
Compensation
Level 1: $105,827
Level 2: $115,190
