Overview

Delaware Online/The News Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an experienced reporter who can cover the state’s civil courts and its complexities. The beat touches national audiences due to the state’s role in business news through the Chancery Court. The reporter will dig into civil filings, mine lawsuits for big names, agencies and drama, and turn fast, enterprise stories that interest readers. The role requires collaboration with others in the newsroom when coverage expands to other beats and a willingness to cover Delaware’s unique Chancery Court, where major business decisions occur.

This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities

  • Cover Delaware civil courts, including digging into civil filings and turning fast and enterprise stories.
  • Identify and develop stories that engage a broad readership and serve as a touchpoint for USA TODAY Network coverage elsewhere.
  • Carve out coverage of Delaware’s Chancery Court and related business news, collaborating with colleagues as coverage expands to other beats.
  • Balance breaking news with short- and long-term enterprise reporting.
  • Use analytics to inform reporting and sourcing; spend time in Wilmington courthouses to build sources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s in communications, journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience at a daily news organization.
  • Familiarity with digital storytelling tools and techniques, especially video for on-site and social use.
  • Outstanding core journalism skills, including writing, spelling, grammar and AP style.
  • Ability to thrive in a competitive news market and collaborate effectively.
  • Deep understanding of journalism ethics.
  • Experience with social media, online metrics, third-party tools and content management systems.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
