Overview
Job title: Assistant Professor of AI in the Visual Arts
We seek a tenure-track assistant professor who is an artist whose research engages emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in relation to multidisciplinary practices in the visual arts. The position explores and leverages AI as a tool in the workflows of contemporary artists, combining a critical perspective with ethical and adaptive practices for a lifetime of artmaking in a rapidly changing world. Emphasis is on artists whose practices result in physical and embodied mediums (e.g., painting, sculpture, glass, printmaking) and those who pursue collaborative approaches.
The appointment is a 50/50 joint appointment at the Assistant Professor level between the Department of Art and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) with the Department of Art as the tenure home.
This role supports the university’s AI Fluency Initiative and the development of integrative and critical approaches for using AI across the Visual Arts, including involvement with the AI Arts Certificate and General Education Courses in AI Arts.
Responsibilities
- Maintain an active research agenda in AI as it relates to the Visual Arts.
- Engage with a national and/or international community of artists working in AI in the Visual Arts.
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses on foundational and advanced topics in AI in the visual arts.
- Lead discussions on the ethical, historical, political dimensions of AI and its impact on society.
- Provide hands-on instruction in coding, data gathering, and digital-to-physical production workflows.
- Lead group critiques and provide feedback on conceptual and technical aspects of student work.
- Advise and mentor students to develop creative vision, technical skills, and professional practices.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the Department of Art and ACCAD to develop curriculum and programmatic revisions.
- Work with Faculty, Research Staff, and GRAs at ACCAD on cross-university and community projects.
- Serve on departmental committees.
Required Education and Experience
- Terminal degree in Art or related field by August 15, 2026.
- Demonstrated experience with multiple AI workflows, tools, and technologies relevant to creative practice.
- Creative research outcomes using mediums beyond screens or digital displays.
