PURPOSE: The Library Technician performs para-professional library service, including: circulation services; technical services; interlibrary loan services; adult and children’s services; library support services; public, clerical and collection maintenance services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Circulation and Inter-library Loan Services Performs circulation and procedures and activities including: check-in; check-out; collection security; library card, holds; fines/fees; lost and paid materials; donations; and issuing room keys. Reviews and maintains patron registrations. Prepares and mails overdue mailers. Conducts overdue phone calls and maintains overdue paperwork. Responsible for operating and balancing money from the cash register, copiers, change machine, public Internet printer coin-op and safe. Assists in the operation and maintenance of library equipment. Typing, and filing. Assists with solving and directing patron concerns and questions both in-person and by phone. Develops and maintains positive relationships with the public, employees, and officials in a courteous and professional manner. Performs automated interlibrary loan and in-transit activities and compiles reports and statistics. Interacts with staff at other libraries, participating in the interlibrary loan process. Collection Maintenance and Technical Services Empties indoor and outdoor returns. Shelves materials in a timely and accurate manner. Receives, removes, and returns library materials. Conducts searches for library materials. Prepares, repairs, and reconditions library materials. Ensures materials on shelves are straightened and materials on tables are returned to the sorting room. Responsible for routine cataloging, data entry, automated file and record maintenance. Compiles lists and statistics as required. Performs acquisition, catalog, and collection maintenance work. Assists in receiving, returning, and filing invoices. Performs word processing, filing and bibliographical checking. Uses bibliographic resources. Organizes, files and maintains serial subscriptions and periodical collection. Library Support Services Performs a variety of work in reference, patron assistance and information referral. Assists patrons with electronic resources and library materials and instructs patrons in the use of computer systems. Directs library users to standard references. Assists with displays to promote library services to the public. Assists in training and reports on progress of new technicians. Keeps departmental managers and supervisors informed of current service needs, interests, policy and procedure requirements of the department. Provides feedback for library goals and long-range planning presented by the library. THE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent. Two (2) years of successful library or relevant experience is desirable. Must be available to work days, evenings, and weekends on a rotating schedule. Must be able to perform physical activities such as climbing (ascending or descending steps, stairs or short stepladders), stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 pounds), fingering, grasping, reaching, bending/twisting, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions. Equivalent combinations of training and experience will be considered. 2025 SALARY RANGE: Pay Range 109 is $18.91- $21.62 per hour. (Appointments are usually made at the beginning of the range).
