The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional skills in drawing, painting, communication, and organization with a proven history of published illustrations and experience in concept or entertainment design. A seasoned industry artist and educator with a passion for storytelling, world-building, and character design across multiple genres, platforms, and pipelines, including 2D and 3D animation, they mentor students to build industry-ready portfolios and effective branding while staying current with trends in animation, gaming, and entertainment design.

Responsibilities

  • Inspire and mentor the next generation of artists preparing for careers in animation, film, games, and themed entertainment.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in visual development and illustration using traditional and digital media; incorporate industry workflows to support portfolio development for animation, gaming, and other entertainment industries.
  • Offer critiques and mentorship in character design, environment design, prop design, and worldbuilding; support curriculum development aligned with industry standards.
  • Maintain an active practice or pursue ongoing professional growth; participate in departmental meetings, reviews, and events.
  • Adhere to duties in the SCAD Faculty Handbook (coursework preparation, syllabus design and approval, office hours, midterm grade reviews, etc.).
  • Provide extra help sessions, extended learning opportunities, and field trips outside of regular class hours.
  • Model professionalism; fulfill grading and academic documentation requirements; record attendance; assist with academic assessment and institutional effectiveness efforts.
  • Support departmental and university-wide initiatives by attending in-person or virtual events (faculty councils, admissions activities, accreditation support, curriculum development, exhibitions, etc.).
  • Fulfill teaching assignments determined by contact hours as specified in the Employment Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of professional experience in visual development, concept art, or related entertainment design fields.
  • Strong background in illustration, with demonstrated ability to teach foundational and advanced visual development concepts.
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D tools and workflows (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Blender, ZBrush, Autodesk Maya, or similar software).
  • Knowledge of paint-over and 3D block-in techniques.
  • Experience collaborating in a studio environment and working within established pipelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in illustration, animation, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Teaching experience at the collegiate level or in mentorship roles.
