Overview
The Napa County Library system serves four locations as an integral part of the communities. The mission is to enrich people’s lives with books and information through a wide assortment of materials, access to technology, and dynamic programming including author events, reading programs, music workshops, DIY and craft workshops, STEM events, cooking, dancing, and more. Napa County Libraries are the hub of each community, welcoming all.
Librarian I is the entry-level position in the professional librarian series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform professional library duties in an assigned area and may supervise sub-professional library personnel. Incumbents are expected to attain the proficiency necessary for advancement to Librarian II.
Librarian II is the fully qualified journeyman level in the professional librarian series. Incumbents perform difficult professional library work in a major division of the library and may supervise professional, paraprofessional, and sub-professional staff.
Librarians must be willing to work evenings, weekends, various locations throughout the County, and holidays as required.
This recruitment is being conducted to establish an eligibility list for future full-time, part-time, limited term, and extra help Librarian I/II positions in Calistoga. Positions may be filled at the I or II level depending on qualifications. Positions for the Calistoga Library require bilingual Spanish/English abilities. Bilingual pay differential will apply.
Position types: Permanent Full-time (40 hours/week, benefited), Permanent Part-time (less than 40 hours/week, benefited), and Extra help (non-benefited, up to 29 hours/week, up to 1,000 hours per fiscal year). Extra help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities open to regular staff.
Telework Availability: Teleworking is not permitted during the first six months of employment and/or during the first six months of a probationary period. If permitted after six months, telework may be up to two days per week.

Position Requirements
Experience and Education: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical path includes the following:
Librarian I ($42.09 - $50.06/hour)
Education: Possession of a graduate degree in library science issued by a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
Librarian II ($45.49 - $54.36/hour)
Experience: One year of experience in professional library work.
Education: Possession of a graduate degree in library science issued by a college or university accredited by the American Library Association.
License or Certificate: Any license, certification, or registration required for this position must be maintained in good standing during employment.
Recruitment Process
1. Applications will be accepted online on a continuous basis until the vacancy is filled. The first review of applications will be the week of September 12, 2025.
2. Applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications and supplemental questions will be scored by subject matter experts on a flow basis until the vacancy is filled.
3. The most qualified candidates will be invited to an oral panel interview on a flow basis until the vacancy is filled. The most qualified candidates from the interview will be placed on an eligibility list. The eligibility list may be used to fill current and future full-time, part-time, limited term, and extra help vacancies over the next 12 months.

Key Responsibilities
Public Service: Provide reference and reader’s advisory services to parents, children, educators, and the general public; demonstrate how to use the library catalog and find information sources; assist patrons with computers (public access computers, internet, and online resources); monitor library spaces for safety and orderliness.
Collection Development: Review, select, weed, and maintain materials in assigned areas; update and replace dated materials; enter orders in acquisitions programs; monitor allocated funds.
Programming and Outreach: Present programming regularly; coordinate and oversee volunteer programs; assist in outreach to schools and local organizations; participate in public service and community events; prepare publicity for programming and create booklists and brochures as needed.
Other: Contribute to overall library operations by serving on committees and assisting with projects.
Additional duties include locating and assisting patrons with library materials, digital resources, and reference questions; supervising staff as needed; inventories; acting as person in charge when required; writing book reviews and promotional materials.
