Overview

American Literature before World War I (tenure-track) — The Department of English at the University of Notre Dame invites applications and nominations for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in any aspect of American literature from the nation’s earliest texts through the First World War. Special attention will be given to applicants with expertise in periods up to 1865, including the colonial period, the Revolutionary era, and the American Renaissance. The specialty is open and may involve expertise in multiethnic American literature (including African American literature and Native American literature); religion and literature; sound, performance, and media studies; transnational approaches to American literature; and/or American literature viewed as a branch of Global Anglophone literature. While these are priorities, scholars with other areas of focus are also encouraged to apply and will be given full consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop courses in American literature before World War I; contribute to undergraduate and graduate education.
  • Engage in scholarly research and contribute to departmental service.

Qualifications

  • Entry level: candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree or have completed all but the dissertation in American Literature or a related field.
  • Advanced assistant level: candidates must have a Ph.D. in American Literature or a related field.
