The Asbury Park Press is seeking a digital-first breaking news reporter to cover one of the most-read topics at the Jersey Shore. We are looking for someone who hates to get beat, will go to scenes to fully report not only the news, but the context, and is always on the lookout for follow-up stories and trends.

The position demands initiative, accuracy, urgency and strong news judgment. Quick writing and reporting skills are crucial. So is the ability to juggle stories while staying focused on the digital details of story production: headlines, SEO, multimedia assets and other points of optimization.

The Asbury Park Press is one of the larger newsrooms in the USA TODAY Network and is located at the Jersey Shore, home to some of the most-visited beaches in the country. We’re about an hour from New York City and 90 minutes from Philadelphia. It’s a great place to live and work.

Responsibilities

  • Report quickly, clearly and accurately.
  • Bring context and local knowledge to your reporting.
  • Use metrics to inform story choices and shape strategies. This includes being adept at SEO. Show readers not just that something happened, but why.
  • Demonstrate fast news judgment on an ongoing basis.

How To Apply

We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply. We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

  • Your resume – one to two pages.
  • A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
  • Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
