EKG Lab Patient Care Technician - UI Heart and Vascular Center

The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a Patient Care Technician to support our EKG Lab. Under general supervision, administers EKGs on all outpatients at our main campus clinic. Responsible for performing EKGs, applying cardiac monitors on patients and processing cardiac monitors when returned to our clinic.

Schedule:40 hours per week, Scheduled hours between 7am – 6pm, Monday through Friday

Position Responsibilities

  • Performs EKGs on all outpatients at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Performs necessary maintenance on equipment to ensure operational condition.
  • Provides assistance and answers questions for clinical technicians, externs, physicians and technicians
  • Acts as receptionist to the EKG laboratory area.
  • Follows general policies and procedures in accordance with the regulations of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Internal Medicine, and UI Heart and Vascular Center.
  • Edits reports of EKGs to the computer.
  • Performs placement of Holter monitors and 30-day event recorders.
  • Scans Holter monitor recordings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Assumes responsibility for on-going self-learning and maintenance of clinical skills, analyzing own performance and set goals.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally, electronically, and in writing with patients, family members and health care staff.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
  • Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments and supplies.
  • Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Special Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and meet University Fleet Safety Program requirements.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant is preferred.
  • Direct patient-care experience.
  • Experience working in a health care environment.
  • Experience providing customer service relations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
