Assistant Director, Writing Consultant Coordinator: Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center - UTK

In partnership with the Managing Director, the Assistant Director of the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center serves as the Writing Consultant Coordinator, overseeing the Center’s writing consultation program, recruiting, hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluating consultants who provide in-person and online writing help. Teaches a peer tutoring course for new undergraduate consultants. Assesses and reports on the effectiveness of the writing consultation training program. Also helps with the management of day-to-day operations of the Herbert Writing Center, including scheduling, compiling various reports, and performing data analytics on student usage of the Center. Offers writing consultations and workshops when needed.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the Writing Consultant Coordinator: Develops and implements policies for the writing consultation program, coordinates with the Managing Director of the Herbert Writing Center. Recruits, hires, trains, observes, supervises, and evaluates writing consultants. Assesses effectiveness and student satisfaction with the program and helps implement improvements. Writes reports analyzing data on student use, satisfaction, and improvement.
  • Instruction: Teaches a peer tutoring course for new undergraduate writing consultants. Develops and delivers instructional workshops for faculty, students, and other campus units.
  • Administrative Assistance: Assists with day-to-day Herbert Writing Center operations, responds to student needs, and offers writing consultations. Assists with development and delivery of presentations to promote the Center. Represents the Center on University committees as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, or related field
  • Experience: 3 years writing center experience (including undergraduate tutoring programs) and 2 years college-level classroom teaching
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Knowledge of writing center theory and practice
    • Knowledge of peer tutoring and college student development
    • Knowledge of writing program assessment models
    • Knowledge of PC and Mac computers and software (Microsoft Word, Excel)
    • Ability to supervise and train college students
    • Ability to organize and maintain paper and electronic records
    • Ability to communicate orally with diverse groups including students, faculty, staff, and general public
    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing
    • Ability to collect, analyze, and synthesize data
    • Ability to prepare and write e-mail, letters, and reports
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and obligations
    • Ability to problem-solve
    • Ability to work independently
    • Ability to meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in English or related field, with concentration or coursework in Rhetoric/Composition
  • Demonstrated research interests in writing center theory and practice
  • Experience fostering diverse and inclusive environments

Work Location

  • This position is located at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN, and is onsite only.

Compensation And Benefits

  • UT market range: MR11
  • Anticipated hiring range: $66,000-$70,000

The Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center serves student writers in all disciplines of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, academic community by offering free and individualized help throughout the writing process. Trained writing consultants provide feedback in one-to-one conversations that help students develop confidence and skill as writers.
