Summary

The Philadelphia Inquirer is looking for an experienced sports editor who can lead a team of editors and writers covering one of the most intense beats in sports - the Philadelphia Eagles. In a city and region famous for its uber-passionate fans, the ideal candidate will blanket Eagles news both on and off the field, embrace new story formats, have a true sense of urgency and a high motor. The role makes maximum use of newsletters, SEO, multi-pronged approach to off-platform content and digital storytelling - written, video and audio - as core to the mission of our newsroom.

What You'll Do
  • Report directly to and work directly with the Managing Editor, Sports and serve as top editor for Eagles
  • Spearhead Eagles-related newsgathering, big-swing enterprise, both short- and long-term projects, as well as premium content and sports adjacent stories in written, video and audio formats
  • Lead an aggressive news operation, working with writers to break and react to news in real time, particularly with The Inquirer's live blog
  • Communicate with Eagles beat writers to plan coverage off team access, but also spur and ideate angles that go beyond the typical daily story
  • You should build consensus around must-have content on all publishing channels, and the roles beat writers play in that strategy
  • Communicate with fellow editors and the newsroom to maximize the efficiency of our sports publishing for all teams and sports through shared budgeting documentation
  • You will contribute to Sports Daily, The Inquirer's sports newsletter
  • During the NFL season, you will lead coverage of the Eagles on every game day, communicating with both sports and news on story budgets and assignments.
  • Use audience analytics as a resource in determining best practices to grow audience, increase loyalty from subscribers, and build our subscriber base
  • Push content on social platforms via branded accounts, complementing the work done on social by beat writers and columnists
  • May oversee Flyers coverage with main NHL editor
  • Monitor social media accounts of your reporters and columnists as well as that of competing reporters and sports media outlets
  • Edit copy for content, style and grammar
  • Assign photos and possible video for live games and in-depth stories
  • Publish stories on our website using strong SEO, great headlines and multimedia display
  • Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment
Who We're Looking for
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent and proven leadership skills and is fully committed to a team-first ecosystem. As the Eagles editor, you should be an effective communicator, excel at multi-tasking, inspire your writers to journalistic excellence, career growth and development
  • You should display a high level of understanding and empathy, know each beat reporter's strengths, and play to them as much as possible while establishing an effective team culture
  • A portfolio of experience heading up professional sports coverage is a must. A minimum 5-7 years is required, NFL experience preferred
  • The Eagles deputy editor will come with an established network of sources and contacts across sports but especially the NFL and Philadelphia. He/she also is someone who has an effective gauge of Philadelphia's sports culture - especially the Eagles' unique fan base - and will collaborate thoughtfully with editors and writers to craft well-reported and researched stories
  • Excellent line editing, headline writing and story formulation skills - especially a digital vision for presentation - is critical
  • A knowledge of print workflow and story utility is a plus
  • You should also be a talented wordsmith and idea creator, working closely with editors on other sports. You should cover the basics, but always think about what's next for players, the team, the league, and what readers are looking forward to
    Coverage of the Eagles is 365 days a year, especially during the slowest news weeks, with reporting and analysis demonstrating to readers The Inquirer's expertise on the beat in season or off
  • The public-facing nature of this job requires a confident public speaker who can convene diverse audiences and lead discussions in creative and productive ways in a remote/hybrid environment. Further, this candidate will be an active participant on social media, helping produce written stories into social posts that stand on their own
