Position Title: Communication Arts Studio Technician

Position Summary

The Communication Arts Studio Technician will provide support to the studios, labs, and online operations in an academic, instructional environment. Supported activities include live sports, news, televised events, and other productions. The Communication Arts Studio Technician reports to the Dean, School of Media and Design.

Job Duties

Essential Job Duties

  • Maintains, installs, configures and updates broadcast equipment, lab workstations, department servers, RAID systems, network storage systems, A/V equipment, cameras, camcorders, DSLR, microphones, mixers, video switchers, live video production, editing systems, online Internet radio, and all broadcasting and streaming services.
  • Assists Communication Arts faculty in prepping equipment for media production courses, newscasts, and student media projects.
  • Diagnoses and repairs equipment, including but not limited to soldering connectors for audio, video and electrical cables.
  • Fabricates/repairs network, audio, and video cables and connections.
  • Provides guidance on equipment purchases, including working with vendors to obtain quotes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of broadcast signals and test procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to troubleshoot and resolve in-depth problems quickly.
  • Ability to exercise flexibility/adaptability in an often unpredictable production environment.
  • Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies both inside and outside UIW.
  • Maintenance expertise in Apple OS X, Apple OS X Server, Microsoft Windows, Ross Switchers, Linux OS, Satellite reception (Weather Central), Audio Mixers, Compix (CG), Autoscript teleprompter, SONY HD cameras, JVC HD cameras, Panasonic HD cameras, Weather Central Weather Graphics System.
  • Working knowledge of NewTek Tricaster Systems, Final Cut Pro Suite, MS Office, Adobe Suite, Avid Protools, Ableton Live, network servers, network protocols, configuration and cabling.
  • Link aggregation and Channel bonding.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Compliance with all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Education and Experience

Required Education: Some college.

Required Work Experience: Three (3) years technical experience supporting equipment needs in a digital broadcast or production environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience in higher education.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.

Work Environment

Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed to meet production demands.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs of computer equipment.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat to retrieve and install equipment.
  • Ability to push/pull equipment carts holding up to 100lbs.
  • Ability to actively engage in troubleshooting and installation activities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to move about campus to provide support as needed.
