About The Court

Butte County Superior Court operates two facilities (Chico and Oroville) and provides legal, operational, and administrative functions overseen by the Presiding Judge and Court Executive Officer. The court employs judges, commissioners, and support staff and engages in various collaborations and outreach programs.

About The Position

Court Reporters stenotype or voice write a verbatim record of courtroom proceedings and provide general support to the assigned judge related to the official record. The ideal candidate has experience transcribing proceedings, familiarity with real time reporting, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Salary (Full-Time): $80,974.40 to $98,425.60 per year; (Part-Time): $38.93 to $47.32 per hour; (Daily Pro Tem): $500 per day. Daily (Pro Tem) Court Reporters are considered extra-help employees.

Essential Job Functions

  • Attend Superior Court sessions and provide computer aided reporting and transcription of proceedings using stenography machines or voice writing systems.
  • Read back testimony to courts and juries.
  • Prepare transcripts within prescribed deadlines.

Knowledge Of

  • Computer aided transcription systems
  • Legal procedures, rules, precedents, terminology, documents, forms
  • Medical terminology and business English
  • Common office machines

Ability To

  • Operate a computer aided transcription system
  • Perform complex court reporting duties with speed and accuracy
  • Identify and use legal forms and terminology
  • Make verbatim records of court proceedings
  • Interpret and apply laws and directions with good judgment
  • Follow directions and work with others cooperatively

Typical Qualifications

  • Must possess a computer aided transcription system
  • California License to practice as a certified shorthand reporter
  • Possession or potential to obtain a valid California driver’s license may be required

Supplemental Information

Criminal history background check required. Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license may be required. Physical requirements and work environment described, with reasonable accommodations available. Normal hours are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; occasional long hours or weekend work may be required.

New Hire Incentives

  • Full-Time Court Reporters may receive up to $5,000 incentive, paid in increments of $1,250 every three months for 12 months
  • Part-Time Court Reporters (half-time or greater) may receive up to $2,500 incentive, paid in increments of $650 every three months for 12 months

Court Reporter Student Loan Forgiveness

  • Eligible new hires may receive loan repayments up to $25,000, with a maximum annual repayment of $5,000 distributed across 26 pay periods
