Position Description
The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is the largest unified trial court in the United States. The Court's 582 judicial officers and its dedicated workforce of over 4,600 full-time employees serving across 36 facilities work purposefully and seamlessly to achieve the mission to provide equal access to justice to all of Los Angeles County. ABOUT THE POSITION
Join us as a Court Reporter Intern and embark on an exhilarating journey to develop the essential skills for providing precise verbatim reporting of court proceedings. As a Court Reporter Intern, you'll experience a variety of hearings-including civil, criminal, and juvenile-within a dynamic and immersive learning environment. There are two Court Reporter Intern opportunities available with the Los Angeles Superior Court: Court Reporter Intern (Non-Licensed) and Court Reporter Intern (Licensed).
  • For Non-Licensed Interns: Develop essential skills and practical experience to prepare for the Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license, issued by the Court Reporters Board of California, while refining your Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT) proficiency.
  • For Licensed Interns: Sharpen your expertise, build confidence, and gain real-world experience as a working Court Reporter.


Throughout this internship, you'll actively report the record, prepare transcripts, and ensure compliance with Government Codes, Rules of Court, and Statutes. This unique opportunity provides the foundation for a successful and rewarding career in court reporting.
SALARY
Court Reporter Intern (Non-Licensed):$25.00 hourly
Court Reporter Intern (Licensed):$40.00 hourly

SCHEDULE
Court Reporter Interns must be available to work up to 20 hours per week and one of the following schedules for the duration of the internship:
  • Choice of 2 full days (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), PLUS choice of 1 additional morning (8:00 am - 12:00 pm), or
  • 5 mornings/week (8:00am - 12:00pm)


SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify, you must meet one of the following requirements at time of application:
  • COURT REPORTER INTERN (NON-LICENSED): High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, current enrollment in, or completion of, a Court Reporter training program accredited by the Court Reporters Board of California, and *verification of passing at least one 180wpm or faster speed test.
  • COURT REPORTER INTERN (LICENSED): High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and a current Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license issued by the Court Reporters Board of California.

Note: A valid California Class C driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation is required to carry out job-related essential functions.

*REPORTING SPEED VERIFICATION: Documentation to demonstrate the ability to report at a speed of 180wpm or faster must be attached to your application or provided via email. Acceptable documentation may include certificate of completion of a 180wpm or faster speed test, email communications from an accredited Court Reporting school verifying successful completion of a 180wpm or faster speed test, or any other documentation provided by an accredited Court Reporting school verifying successful completion of a 180wpm or faster speed test. Please note that submitting one of your school's tests which includes an indication of "Pass" or otherwise on it does not meet this criteria. Formal verification is required.

Options Benefit Plan
Benefits may be purchased using a tax-free monthly benefits allowance between $1,127.65 and $2,430.50 for the 2025 plan year (based on number enrolled in medical coverage). If the monthly cost of the benefits selected is less than the monthly allowance, the employee receives the difference as additional taxable pay, up to a maximum of $244.00. The Options plan includes a robust range of insurance options, including medical, dental, disability, life, and AD&D insurance.

Flexible Spending Accounts
Employees may contribute up to $266 per month into a tax-free Health Care Spending Account and up to $400 per month tax-free into a Dependent Care Spending Account. The Court contributes up to $375 per month to the Dependent Care Spending Account.

Leave Benefits
Vacation - All permanent and other designated categories of employees are eligible to earn paid vacation based on years of service. Vacation time may not be used during the first 6 months of employment.

Sick leave - Depending on the length of service and employment categories, up to one day of full pay per month of service is accrued monthly for qualifying service.

Holidays - 14 days per year.

Deferred Compensation Plan (457) - Optional tax-deferred supplemental retirement plan that includes a County match of up to 4% of employee's salary.

Retirement Pension Plan administered by the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA).

If the candidate is a "new member" of the County's defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013, that person's pension will be limited under the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). For these purposes, a "new member" is someone who first becomes a member of LACERA on or after January 1, 2013 - that is, someone first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012 - unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013. Tuition Reimbursement - The Tuition Reimbursement Program provides eligible employees with tuition assistance (maximum $2000 per fiscal year) for courses toward a degree program at an accredited college and/or university.
