Assistant Director of Strategic Communications

Location: Washington, DC. Salary: $85,000-$95,000. Status: Full-time, Exempt. Reports to: Vice President (VP) of Strategic Communications and External Engagement. Supervises: One (1) full-time staff member. Term: Immediately. Overview

The Assistant Director of Strategic Communications and External Engagement will be responsible for reframing AAJC policy, legal, and advocacy advancements into relatable messages and stories about their transformative effect on the lives of vulnerable people. The role focuses on shifting the emphasis from process to impact, and on working collaboratively to identify AAJC initiatives to promote, develop messaging, and determine the best formats and media channels to convey them. Responsibilities

Act as a thought partner to the VP of Strategic Communications and External Engagement to support and implement plans for AAJC and its initiatives. Serve as a senior-level mentor and bridge-builder to enhance collaboration between departments and strengthen partnerships with affiliates and external partners. Coordinate with local partner grantees, affiliate organizations, and coalition partners to effectively raise AAJC’s voice. Supervise the Digital Engagement Associate and collaborate with the strategic communications staff to assign tasks and issue messaging through relevant channels. Advance new ideas and innovations that align with AAJC’s mission and strategic plan. Duties and Responsibilities

Narrative Change/Storytelling: Develop strategies to solicit stories from impacted individuals; collaborate with Policy & Program teams to develop storyline content for issue areas; craft narratives and content that highlight progress and call to action; train staff and partners in narrative use; repurpose existing content; develop narrative change press strategy with the Media Relations Associate. Messaging Development: Develop message guidance for AAJC and its partner network; lead or assist with research, writing, editing, and development of communications content; organize webinars or briefings and produce reports; develop multi-channel campaigns; prepare speeches and talking points as needed. Communications Strategy: Identify and implement brand-building initiatives; assist with day-to-day operations including budgeting, staffing, and management of consultants; collaborate with policy and communications teams to develop persuasive content and media-pitch ideas; support content design and events; develop quarterly KPIs and recommend new tools or opportunities. Fundraising: Collaborate with the development team to create donor-focused stories and content; co-plan and support fundraising efforts and events; participate in meetings with prospects/donors as requested. General AAJC Roles: Embody AAJC values, participate in policy development and decision-making, travel and work evenings/weekends as needed, and contribute to committees as requested. Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required; at least eight years in mission-driven, social impact, nonprofit, philanthropy, or communications fields. Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; experience managing communications resources, relationships, vendors, and agencies. Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, messaging strategy, public affairs/PR, content development, writing/editing, project management, presentation development, vendor relations, and budget management. Experience supervising staff and knowledge of Asian American civil and/or human rights issues is desirable. Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication; strong outreach and relationship-building skills; good project and process management; ability to train diverse audiences; attention to detail. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, G Suite, WordPress, and social media platforms. Benefits
